Bindi Irwin’s incredible love story – including fiance’s adorable letter to mum

Bindi Irwin got engaged yesterday to her childhood sweetheart, who once penned a letter to her mum asking if he could contact her.

Bindi Irwin, daughter of the late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, announced her engagement yesterday in an emotional post on social media.

The Aussie’s boyfriend, American Chandler Powell, proposed to her on her 21st birthday after the adorable duo had dated for six years.

It was the legacy of Bindi's father Steve Irwin who first brought the pair together.

Their love story began when professional wakeboarder Chandler met Bindi who was working at Australia Zoo in 2003 when he was on tour from the US.

Chandler posed for a now-resurfaced photo with her that he posted on his Instagram with the caption “Spent yesterday at the Australian Zoo along with Bindi Irwin and staff! One of the most educational and inspirational experiences I’ve ever been a part of.”

Tagging Bindi in the post, he added “Thanks for having us there! It was so awesome being shown around by y’all! Definitely want to come back.”

Chandler was “head over heels” for Bindi straight away, telling People magazine "It just so happened that Bindi was giving tours that day. I'm like, ‘Wow she is amazing.'"

In fact, Chandler even wrote a letter to Bindi’s mum asking if he could stay in contact with her.

Bindi explained that her mum showed her the letter, asking if the person who wrote it was real.

The pair started dating long distance, with Bindi living in Australia and Chandler in the US.

In 2015, Chandler invited Bindi to visit him in Florida to be his prom date. She posted a photo gushing “We don’t really have Prom in Australia but this wonderful human being is American and when his Prom came around he invited me to go to Florida with him.”

She added “I can’t believe this really happened, I felt like I was living in a movie and was a real life Disney princess”.

When Bindi appeared on TV show Dancing with the Stars in 2015, she wrote on Instagram thanking Chandler for “helping me to ice my foot when it hurts, making me tea and hugging me when I’m tired. You’re amazing.”

Bindi explained that the two used to write each other “old fashioned” love letters until 2018, when Chandler moved to Queensland to be with her.

And Chandler was put to the test before he could call himself one of the Irwins – Bindi told Daily Pop that they invited him on their annual crocodile research trip “The ultimate test was saying, ‘Now you’re going to jump on top of a 15-foot crocodile!”

Bindi’s dad, Steve Irwin, was famous for his wildlife TV shows where he would wrestle crocodiles.

He died in 2006 when he was fatally stabbed in the heart by a stringray. Bindi followed in his footsteps, becoming a wildlife conservationist and TV personality.

Loved-up Bindi announced the engagement on Wednesday as Chandler got down on one knee at her birthday party at Australia Zoo – fittingly where the two first met.

Surrounded by her family and friends, the moment was captured by Bindi’s brother, Robert, who was in on the surprise.

She wrote “On my birthday I said ‘yes’ and ‘forever’ to the love of my life.
Chandler, close to 6 years ago I fell in love with you and every day since has been a whirlwind of adventure and true happiness.”

She continued “I’m so looking forwarding to spending our forever together as your wife. Here’s to a lifetime of friendship, purpose and unconditional love. — Now let’s get married already!”

Chandler also commemorated the day, writing on Instagram "Almost 6 years ago we met at Australia Zoo.

"I immediately fell head over heels for her kind and thoughtful heart that radiates so much light. Proposing in her very favorite place in the zoo, surrounded by animals, seemed like the perfect way to embark on this incredible new chapter in our lives.

He concluded “Bee, I love you more than anything in this world and I always will. Happy Birthday."

Fans flocked to send their congratulations to the happy couple, with one writing "Congratulations beautiful couple brilliant news your dad would be so so proud."

Bindi’s mum, Terri, wrote a touching tribute on Twitter “Best day ever! Chandler asked and beautiful @BindiIrwin said yes. I am so very happy, and I know Steve would be too. Congratulations!!”
