Boy George, 61, has touched down in Australia to take part in the latest series of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! starting this weekend. The star has his hopes pinned on being crowned “Queen” of the jungle, and said he will be giving his “Boy Georgey” performances in camp.
Boy George, whose real name is George Alan O’Dowd, will be in the Australian jungle alongside Lioness Jill Scott and presenter Charlene White among many others.
However, this is not the first time the singer has been asked to appear on the show, simply the first time he’s agreed to after seemingly being duped by hosts Ant and Dec.
The I’m A Celeb hosts were playing a long game of persuasion, as they originally hinted at it on their show in April.
George revealed to The Mirror: “I went on Saturday Night Takeaway to do that a while back, I feel like I was set up by Ant and Dec.”
On the show, George was set to perform his hit song Karma Chameleon, and Dec questioned what the term actually meant.
The singer cheekily replied: “It means I’ll never have to say ‘I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!'”
The three entertainers continued to speak about the possibility of George appearing on I’m a Celeb, and he claimed he would only agree they “did like a vegan or vegetarian one”.
To George’s surprise the two said they could and he went on to seriously discuss the show with his manager.
Over time the conversation faded and he decided: “Oh I’m not doing it.”
But Ant and Dec weren’t going to let the star off the hook that easily.
He continued: “Then I spoke to Ant and Dec and you know how charming they are.
“I spoke to them, and they just encouraged me you know, as they do.”
Ultimately the presenting duo were convincing enough to get George to Australia, where he arrived last week wearing a lion’s mask.
While the 61-year-old has some stiff competition, the sizeable paycheque could be enough to motivate the singer.
The Time singer is said to be earning £500,000 for his stint on the show.
Speaking to The Mirror, George noted that he never takes on challenges with the intention of giving a half-baked attempt.
He said: “I don’t ever walk on stage and think I will give a half-level performance, you know.
“And I feel like I’ve been paid well for it so I’m going to be a Boy Georgey as I can.”
Additionally, the star is determined to become “Queen” of the jungle, saying: “It is about bloody time isn’t it, we are so fashionable now, the gays.”
George’s campmates may be in for more than they bargained for as he promised to serenade them and “get involved in everything”.
I’m A Celebrity starts on Sunday night on ITV at 9pm.
