Nicola Coughlan, who plays the role of Penelope Featherington on Netflix’s new hit series Bridgerton, is speaking out in response to people who have criticized the show’s diverse casting.
The show is set in 1813 during the regency era in London and features people of all races. An explanation is given in the show that when the king fell in love with a Black woman and married her, it gave other people of color the ability to achieve status and ranking in society.
Bridgerton is a massive hit for Netflix and the streamer predicts that more than 63 million households will watch the show in the first 28 days of release.
“You know the way some people were like ‘Diversity in period drama doesn’t work’….63 million households thought it did tho so 💀,” Nicola tweeted.
She added, “Remember people were trying to downvote the show on IMDB cos it was so diverse? You can’t downvote us being Netflix fifth biggest original release ever.”
Make sure to read what Nicola had to say about THAT big spoiler at the end of season one.
