Cedric the Entertainer has been making us laugh ever since he rose to fame in the mid-1990s. Over the years, he has captured the hearts of fans with his comedic and acting chops. Today, he is considered one of the most beloved celebrities in the industry.
With a plethora of acting credits under his belt and his latest gig as the 73rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards’ host right around the corner, we wonder: Has Cedric the Entertainer won any Emmys, and if so, how many does he have?
The actor is best known for his films, television shows, and stand-up comedy
Cedric the Entertainer (whose real name is Cedric Antonio Kyles) began his career in the stand-up comedy space. He hosted BET’s ComicView during the 1993–1994 season and HBO’s Def Comedy Jam. After establishing a name for himself in the comedy circuit, the Missouri native began trying his hand at acting.
In 1995, he landed the role of Steve Harvey’s friend Cedric Jackie Robinson on The Steve Harvey Show. He then began appearing in films. He starred in films including Big Momma’s House, Barbershop, Ice Age, Johnson Family Vacation, and Madagascar.
He’s also starred in his share of television shows, including The Soul Man, Power, and The Neighborhood.
Has Cedric the Entertainer won any Emmy Awards in the past?
Despite the many television shows he has starred and made guest appearances on, Cedric the Entertainer has only been nominated one time in the past for the Emmy Awards, according to the event’s official website.
The nomination came in 2003. The comedian was up for the Primetime Emmy Award for Oustanding Art Direction For A Variety Or Music Program for his sketch comedy television series Cedric the Entertainer Presents.
Unfortunately, he didn’t take the award home that night. But despite his Emmy Awards loss, Cedric the Entertainment has still experienced victories over the years.
From 1999-2003, the comedian won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in The Steve Harvey Show.
He’s also won a Gotham Independent Film Award and Black Reel Award. For his work in the biographical films Talk to Me and Cadillac Records, respectively.
Cedric the Entertainer is hosting the 2021 Emmy Awards
Although he has never won an Emmy Award, Cedric the Entertainer isn’t letting his lack of wins stop him from hosting this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards.
The comedian was announced as this year’s host back in July 2021.
In a recent interview with USA Today, the actor opened up about the hosting gig. He shared that he developed one big fear after agreeing to be the Master of Ceremonies for the event.
“The first thing that crossed my mind was when Kevin Hart got canceled for the Oscars,” the comedian said. “I accepted the job and I was like, ‘Wait a minute, what have I done in the last three months that is going to get me canceled before I even go to work?’”
This year’s Emmy Awards will look a little different from past ceremonies due to the fast-spreading delta variant. But, Cedric the Entertainer says viewers can still expect the same kind of celebration, just with a few surprises.
“As a stand-up comedian, I had to wiggle a few minutes where I can get my jokes off…We got some fun sketches, good musical numbers,” he shared. “We’ve all been through a lot the past few years. So the idea of cynicism and mean-spirited jokes is not going to be what the vibe is at all.”
He added, “The idea is discovery, great entertainment and you get to see your favorite celebrities go all out. Ain’t no telling what (Pose star and nominee) Billy Porter is going to have on.”
The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards will air live on Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
