Gogglebox star Mary Killen revealed appearing on the show saved her marriage to Giles Wood.
The pair first met more than 30 years ago, and have been together ever since – sharing two daughters together.
But, speaking about their relationship, she explained that they were like ‘ships in the night’ before they sat down to watch TV.
‘Giles and I were like ships that pass in the night; I got up early, he went to bed late and we rarely even ate together,’ the author recalled. ‘Sitting down and watching television reminded us how much we enjoyed the same jokes.
‘Lockdown wasn’t a great hardship for us; more like an open prison with comfortable beds, but I know a few couples who have split up because they have decided they can’t stand one another.’
Mary also joked that she had thought of her friends’ husbands, but concluded their habits ‘are even more irritating’ than Giles.
‘The truth is, we’re both neurotic. I have a low tolerance for things like whistling,’ she added to the Telegraph.
‘He hates it when the phone rings and just sits there demanding “who on earth IS that?” instead of answering it.’
The lovebirds joined Gogglebox in 2015, and have become a staple of the Channel 4 show ever since.
But Mary was initially worried about stepping into the public eye – thanks to Stephen Fry.
Speaking in a previous column for The Spectator, she penned: ‘Thanks to Stephen Fry I had never wanted to be on television.
‘Around the time Fry made the transition from print to screen, and hence real fame, he wrote a piece lamenting the irreversible step he had taken.’
Thankfully, she revealed that the public reaction to her was ‘entirely benign’, adding: ‘People approach me, their faces wreathed in smiles.
’You’re Mary from Gogglebox, aren’t you? I just want to say — your husband makes us laugh.’
Gogglebox continues on Fridays, at 9pm, on Channel 4.
