Jeremy Vine, 55, has shared that Kevin Ashman, 61, is his favourite Egghead, as he noted the genius from Winchester is “probably the greatest” quizzer there has ever been. Kevin has won most of the top-level quiz tournaments in which he has taken part, among them several World and European Championships, and he has evidently made a lasting impression on the quiz show host.

I have to admit, I have a softspot

Jeremy shared: “Kevin Ashman is probably the greatest quizzer that there has ever been.”

Kevin is an English quiz player and is often considered one of the best quizzers in the world.

He has been an Egghead since 2003 and went 10 years on the show without incorrectly answering a single History question.

Along with his major TV successes, he has won 17 gold medals in the National and World Quiz Championships.

However, Jeremy also admitted having a “soft spot” for another Egghead, as he spoke of his fondness for Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Winner Judith Keppel.

He continued: “I have to admit, I have a soft spot for Judith Keppel. She teases me and I tease her!

“We have a lovely relationship on and off-camera. I caught up with her the other day and she’s delighted it’s coming back.

“She’s a real quiz legend as the first person to have won one million on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? – and the only woman.

“Banter is a big part of the show and the chat that the Eggheads have. For those of us who aren’t quizzers, I’m amazed at how much collective knowledge they have,” he added to Radio Times.

Earlier this month it was announced the show would move from the BBC to Channel 5.

Jeremy told how the BBC ditched the popular quiz series Eggheads, after it wanted to attract a younger audience.

The programme features contestants attempting to beat a panel of specialist quizzers in a test of their general knowledge.

It’s thought the series will keep the current roster of expert quizzers when it moves.

A BBC spokesman said last month: “We sometimes have to make difficult decisions in order to grow new shows and we would like to thank the Eggheads and Jeremy Vine, and wish them well with their next chapter.”

Channel 5 commissioning editor Daniel Pearl added he was delighted to welcome the series as the station “grows its audience rapidly”.

Over on Twitter, users discussed how they felt about the changes to the much-loved programme.

One said: “Just heard Eggheads is moving to Channel 5. Isn’t that like Songs of Praise moving to Babestation?”

Another replied: “What slot do you think Eggheads could go into on Channel 5?”

While a third typed: “Good on Channel 5 to bring Eggheads back later this year. Bad decision by BBC could easily have shared the year with House of Games so we have new series not more repeats. Well done Jeremy!”

A fourth commented: “Excellent news. After being ditched by The BBC Eggheads is moving to Channel 5. Life worth living again.”
