Mary Berry says King Charles didnt stop talking’ about Camilla during Damehood

Dame Mary Berry said King Charles “didn’t stop talking about his wife” when he made her a Dame back in 2021.

The former Great British Bake Off judge recalled being presented with her prestigious title by the “charming” royal, known as Prince Charles back then, at Windsor Castle.

Much to her surprise, Mary, 88, received her damehood for her services to cooking, writing and baking.

In a new interview with Good Housekeeping magazine, she said of the moment: “I was in absolute shock.

“I thought, ‘Gosh, a cook becoming a Dame?’ I couldn’t quite believe it.

King Charles and Queen Camilla arrive at church

“The ceremony was at Windsor Castle and I met Prince Charles, as he was then, who was charming and couldn’t stop talking about his wife.”

In pictures from the day, Mary was barely seen without a smile on her face as she spoke to Charles at Windsor.

Outside the venue, she also proudly showed off her honour as her supportive husband Paul Hunnings stood by her side.

Despite the support from family and fans, the professional cook admitted she was longing for her late parents to witness her achievement on the day.

She added: “The biggest sadness was that, at my age, you’ve lost your parents and all through your life, when you do something important, you immediately pick up the phone to call them because they’re the only ones you can really brag to.

“I knew they’d be looking down on me, though.”

On the day, Mary revealed she would be celebrating her honour by “going home for a sandwich and the children are coming tonight”.

She added: “I’m extremely proud and honoured, I just wish my parents were here – they’re looking down and my children are quite excited.

“My aim is to pass on the skill that I love so much, because everybody has to cook each day, whether it’s a student or whatever it is, you’ve got to feed yourself so why not learn to do it well and enjoy it.”
