No one appeared to be more shocked by Viola Davis‘ win at the 2021 SAG Awards than Viola herself!
The 55-year-old actress jumped back in her chair when she was announced as the winner of Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role during the virtual ceremony, which aired on Sunday (April 4).
Viola won the award for her work in the movie Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which was also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
To win the award, Viola beat out Hillbilly Elegy‘s Amy Adams, Pieces of a Woman‘s Vanessa Kirby, Nomadland‘s Frances McDormand, and Promising Young Woman‘s Carey Mulligan.
There is no frontrunner for the Oscars in the Best Actress category this year after Andra Day won the Golden Globe, Carey won the Critics Choice Award, and now that Viola has won the SAG Award.
During her speech, Viola thanked her co-star, the late and “beautiful Chadwick Boseman,” who posthumously won the award for Best Actor.
