Filmmaker Francis Lawrence has his sights set on an R-rated version of the highly-anticipated Constantine 2.
In a recent interview with Gamespot, the director gave an update on the Keanu Reeves-starring sequel, ”So Constantine 2 got obviously held up by the writers strike.” He continued, “And we had to jump through a bunch of hurdles to get control of the character again, because other people had control of the Vertigo stuff.”
Lawrence added, “We have control. Keanu and Akiva Goldsman and I have been in meetings and have been hashing out what we think the story is going to be, and there’s more meetings of those that have to happen — the script has to be written — but really hoping that we get to do Constantine 2, and make a real rated R version of it.”
News of a sequel to the 2005 film hit the internet in 2020 and has received a few updates since then. About a year ago, Lawrence revealed that a script was yet to be written and that he, Reeves and Goldsman have been trying to get a sequel off the ground for years. “It’s been tricky because of the DC/Vertigo world and who owns the character and who has control over the characters, trying to get the right people to go forward. We’ve got that now and now we need the story. We’d all love to do it,” he previously shared.
