NIGO's JINS & SUN Glasses Collection Was Designed With "The Good Old Days in Mind"

NIGO’s craving for the perfect sunglasses hasn’t inspired him to collect eyewear the same way that he collects vintage denim goods but “I’ve bought hundreds of sunglasses,” he told HYPEBEAST. “All of them are randomly placed in a container.” Despite this vast personal archive, NIGO may never have to dip into his collection ever again, thanks to the launch ofhis JINS & SUN collection.

Not unlike Anna Wintour or his mentor, Hiroshi Fujiwara, NIGO‘s rarely ever seen without a pair of dark-lensed sunglasses. Usually perched beneath a field cap, the HUMAN MADE founder’s signature look is often informed by any number of collaborative frames or vintage shades. “I personally like thick and rugged frames,” NIGO. “They suit me well.” However, his new eyewear line includes a vast array of thicknesses and shapes, demonstrating NIGO’s far-ranging influences.

Directed by NIGO and produced by 20-year-old glasses brand JINS, JINS & SUN is driven by a straightforward ethos. “JINS & SUN focuses on functionality and materials,” NIGO said. “The theme of JINS & SUN is to wear sunglasses on a daily basis. Therefore, we have created many variations and colors.” Indeed he has: the debut JINS & SUN offering encompasses a whopping 84 different makeups across 29 unique shapes split into six marked themes. “The Launch Collection was designed with sunglasses from the good old days in mind,” NIGO noted, referring to the chunky frames that align with his own trademark look.1 of 202 of 203 of 204 of 205 of 206 of 207 of 208 of 209 of 2010 of 2011 of 2012 of 2013 of 2014 of 2015 of 2016 of 2017 of 2018 of 2019 of 2020 of 20

The half-dozen categories — “NIGO Launch Collection,” “New Standard,” “Essential,” “Pop,” “Modern” and “Sport & Active” — enjoy their own distinct design cues, ranging from the aforementioned “Launch Collection”s weighty shapes to the slim metal “Modern” frames and streamlined “Sport & Active” makeups. More balanced designs, like the “Essential” and “New Standard,” tread the space in between the more directional offerings.

Of course, such a wide selection makes for a challenging creative process. “Designing sunglasses is not as easy as designing a T-shirt,” NIGO acknowledged. “Even the slightest difference — such as 1 millimeter or less — can have a significant impact on the overall design.” This measured approach even informs the accompanying accessories, which include a cleaning cloth that looks like notebook paper and a series of hardwearing and water-repelling Tyvek cases.

All of the new styles are available on JINS & SUN’s website and JINS stores, ranging in price from $60 USD (“Essential”) to $100 USD (“NIGO Launch Collection”).
