Popeyes Surpasses KFC as the Second-Largest Chicken Chain in the US

According to CNBC, Popeyes has now taken over KFCโ€™s rank as the second-largest chicken fast-food chain in the U.S. Meanwhile, Chick-fil-A remains strong at the top spot ever since it dethroned KFC almost 10 years ago.

Following increasingly aggressive competition in the past few years, KFC has been gradually losing ground in its native country. Based on data from Barclays report, KFC has seen a decline in its market shares, which dropped from 16.1% to 11.3% in just last year. Although Popeyes also experienced a 3.1 % decrease in its U.S. market, its current rate of 11.9% was enough to surpass its rival, KFC.

The change in rankings is mainly due to Chick-fil-Aโ€™s prominent expansion as it dominates the field with its 45.5% market share in the U.S. Even though the Atlanta-based chain remains not open on Sundays, industry experts have highlighted Chick-fil-Aโ€™s compact menu, efficient drive-thrus, and high standards of customer service as the main reasons for its success.
