'Scooby Doo' Animated Spinoff 'Velma' Is Heading To HBO Max

HBO Max has expanded into its adult animated television series with a Scooby Doo prequel series. The spinoff, like its title Velma follows the iconic, orange turtle-neck wearing character, Velma Dinkley.

The streaming service revealed that Velma will offer “an original and humorous spin that unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.” The Mindy Kaling-executive produced series is expected to tell “the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the unsung and underappreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang.”

Adding to her executive producer role, Kaling will also be voicing the character of Velma. Joining her in producing are Charlie Grandy and Howard Klein, both of whom she goes way back with to the days of The Office.

The current production timeline is still unknown but HBO Max has confirmed the order of 10 episodes for the new Velma series. The release date is expected to be announced soon. In recent years, pop culture has revived the Mystery Van gang in numerous films, including the 2002 live-action, Scooby-Doo featuring Linda Cardellini as Velma. In 2020’s animated movie Scoob!, Gina Rodriguez took her turn to step into the iconic mystery solver’s shoes.

HBO Max has also recently announced that it was planning on rebooting the classic MTV series, Clone High.
