After nearly 40 years, Spalding and the NBA are officially announcing the end of their partnership. To many, Spalding has often been synonymous with the game of basketball as it has been the official game ball sponsor for decades.
The ending of the partnership was first announced in May 2020 CNBC reported that Chicago-based company Wilson will be the manufacturer for the NBA’s basketballs starting with the 2021-2022 season. NBA’s president of global partnerships, Salvatore LaRocca said, “This partnership with Wilson returns us to our roots as we plan for the future. We were partners for 37 seasons dating back to when Wilson manufactured the first official NBA basketballs in 1946, and we look forward to growing the game of basketball together.”
To commemorate the multi-year relationships with the NBA, Spalding is set to release a final batch of Spalding NBA Official Game Balls to memorialize the many years both brands have come together to create the gold standard for basketball equipment. The last run of the basketballs will be available for $169.99 USD beginning on June 10 at 10 a.m. EST exclusively on Spalding.
Elsewhere in the NBA, Nikola Jokic wins the 2020-21 NBA MVP award.
