T-Pain Goes Live with Mark Zuckerberg to Discuss Improvements to Instagram's DM Request Folder

While most Instagram users have likely checked their DM request folder at one time or another, T-Pain revealed that he never knew he had one until only two weeks ago. Upon that realization, the rapper discovered hundreds of requested messages from famous friends and other celebrities — including Diplo, Fergie, Viola Davis, Jamie Foxx and more — who shared praises and sought collaboration without response. In the weeks since, T-Pain has dedicated time to responding to those messages, before hopping on a live video call with the main player behind the social media platform’s interface, Mark Zuckerberg.

“I heard you were having some trouble with your DMs and I think I can help with that,” said Zuckerberg at the beginning of the conversation.

On Instagram Live, T-Pain explained the issues he experienced with the request folder and urged Zuckerberg to make changes to the platform so that other users could avoid making the same mistake. The record-maker inquired about a potential implementation that could show users when a person has DM’d them, in case they miss the message in their requested folder, which led Zuckerberg to expound on the requested folder’s existence in the first place.

“The reason why we have the ‘request feature’ is basically to prevent bullying and spam and other unwanted interactions. To be able to filter that out,” Zuckerberg explained. “Ideally, we should be able to help figure out who the other people who might be sending you messages are…The feature isn’t quite as advanced today as hopefully it will be in the future.”

“I just think, on principle, anytime Rihanna sends you a message, it should go into your main inbox,” he added.
