What happened at the end of Unforgotten series 4? Finale explained

Two years after the ITV crime drama left viewers stunned and heartbroken, Unforgotten is back once again.

Tonight (February 27) at 9pm, the award-winning crime drama returns for another six episodes, with viewers still reeling from events of season four.

The show follows DCI Cassie Stuart (Nicola Walker) and her team as they attempt to solve a series of cold cases, which have remained unsolved for years.

However, due to events at the end of series 4, a huge influx of new characters will be entering Unforgotten – will they be up to the task?

Here’s what happened at the end of series 4 that inspired the huge host of changes.

Ending of Unforgotten series four explained

In season 4 of Unforgotten, DCI Cassie Stuart and her team, DI Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) and DC Fran Lingley (Carolina Main), thought they had an open and shut case when they found a dead body that had been stored in a freezer for 30 years.

However, the case escalated severel and what began as an investigation into a potential car crash developed into an investigation into the role that four police academy graduates played in the frozen man’s death.

With a number of potential suspects and a fountain pen suspected as the murder weapon, a 30-year-old case was suddenly blown wide open for Cassie, Sunny, and Fran to figure out.

What happened to Cassie at the end of Unforgotten?

With the case seemingly resolved after Fiona (Liz White), Ram (Phaldut Sharma), and Dean’s (Andy Nyman) confessions, everything looked to be in order.

But viewers were left devastated when DCI Stuart, the main character from day one, was shockingly killed off after being involved in a car crash.

Doctors attempted to save her life but season 4 ended with DI Khan delivering a touching eulogy at her funeral.

The writers said afterwards: ‘If we’d known COVID was coming, we would have given people a less depressing storyline.’

How will the show carry on with her?

What can we expect from Unforgotten series five?

First things first, there’s a new DCI in town. DCI Jessica James, to be precise. Played by Irish actress Sinéad Keenan, she’ll be taking charge of the team this time.

This time, her team will be tackling a case of human remains that have been discovered in a house in Hammersmith, London.

Sunny suspects ‘gang war’, but his colleagues can’t be certain. Game of Thrones and Derry Girls actor Ian McElhinney will be joining the cast as Tony.

Tony is a former politician, living a comfortable life, until a dark secret from his past threatens to tear it all down. McElhinney said: ‘He’s obviously implicated in some way.’
