Join us as we take a look at all the stars marking their 80th birthdays in 2023, starting with this memorable pop star who’s so much more…
Everyone knows the words to the earworm: “Oh, Mickey, you’re so fine / You’re so fine you blow my mind / Hey, Mickey! Hey, Mickey!” And on Sept. 22, Toni Basil — the woman who sang the hit “Mickey,” which topped the Billboard music chart in 1982 — turns 80.
As far as her music career goes, Toni (seen here in 2023) was a one-hit wonder, though she also directed, produced and choreographed what was one of the most popular music video from the early days of MTV (the cheerleading outfit she wore in the “Mickey” video was plucked from her own closet — it’s the same one she wore as a teen at Las Vegas High School).
But her six-decade career as a dancer and choreographer is iconic.
Toni’s resume is chock-full of memorable work: She worked as a dancer and assistant choreographer on the 1964 Elvis Presley and Ann-Margret movie “Viva Las Vegas” and went on to choreograph everything from the Talking Heads’ memorable “Once in a Lifetime” music video to tours and stage shows for artists including David Bowie, Bette Midler and Tina Turner.
The sometime actress appeared in the 1969 film “Easy Rider,” 1970’s “Five Easy Pieces” and, later, shows like “Laverne & Shirley” and “Baywatch Nights.” A founding member of the pioneering street dance group the Lockers — who opened for Frank Sinatra — Toni served as a guest judge on early seasons of “So You Think You Can Dance?” at the end of the aughts.
Toni also did the choreography on movies like “American Graffiti,” “That Thing You Do!” and the “Legally Blonde” films as well as, more recently, Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time In Hollywood” — when she was 75! (She even had a cameo: That was Toni wearing her trademark fedora dancing on a Pan Am flight with star Margot Robbie.)
Looking back on her career, Toni told CBS News in 2020, “I actually go, ‘Wow! How lucky can a girl get?'”

On Sept. 6, Pink Floyd musician Roger Waters turned 80.
He publicly marked the day by taking to Instagram to share a video of himself “answering fan questions” including an inquiry into how he was feeling about such a big birthday.
“I’m reconciled to it,” he said. “I don’t do birthdays, by and large, as anybody who’s toured with me will know. When I have a birthday on the road — not just the band but the crew and everybody, all the truck drivers and bus drivers and the catering — they’re all under strict instructions that nobody mentions my birthday.”
