San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident on July 14, resulting in multiple injuries that will restrict his involvement as the team’s training camp begins. The team announced the incident on Saturday, coinciding with the opening of camp activities.
Shanahan sustained a concussion, a broken nose, several fractured ribs, and hand injuries. According to reports, he also required over 40 stitches in his face. The team confirmed that these injuries are non-life-threatening. He was transported by paramedics to a local hospital, where he spent much of the day before being released.
The accident involved Shanahan’s vehicle colliding with an SUV near his home in Northern California. Authorities reported that the other driver involved in the collision was not injured. Drugs and alcohol were not factors in the incident, and both drivers cooperated with law enforcement; no citations were issued.
Coaching Responsibilities During Recovery
While Shanahan recovers, assistant head coach Chris Foerster will oversee the team’s initial practice on Sunday. Foerster will be supported by coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer, who will handle head coaching responsibilities during this period. The 49ers organization stated that Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis at the start of training camp.
General manager John Lynch addressed reporters on Saturday, indicating that the team is being cautious regarding Shanahan’s return to full coaching duties. Lynch explained that Shanahan will follow a protocol similar to that of a player recovering from a concussion, meaning he must meet certain markers before being cleared for all activities. Doctors have not yet cleared him to participate in training camp activities until he is free of concussion symptoms.
Shanahan reportedly informed the 49ers assistant coaches of the accident on Tuesday. He has been recuperating at home, and while he is said to be recovering well, a specific timeline for his full return has not been provided. Lynch expressed that the expectation is for Shanahan to be better long before the Week 1 opener, though he emphasized that everyone responds to such injuries differently.
Shanahan’s Tenure with the 49ers
Kyle Shanahan, 46, is entering his 10th season as the head coach for the San Francisco 49ers. He is recognized as one of the most highly regarded coaches in the game, particularly for his offensive acumen. Under his leadership, the 49ers have made two trips to the Super Bowl following the 2019 and 2023 seasons. The team also made two additional appearances in the NFC title game in the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Shanahan holds a regular-season record of 82-67 with the 49ers. Including playoffs, his record stands at 91-72. This places him third in franchise history for wins, behind George Seifert, who has 108 wins, and Bill Walsh, with 102 wins. He is 11 victories away from surpassing Bill Walsh for second on the team’s all-time list and 17 victories away from holding the most wins in franchise history.
Last season, the team navigated significant injuries to finish with a 12-5 record in the regular season and secured a playoff victory. Shanahan finished fifth in the voting for the AP NFL Coach of the Year. Assistant head coach Chris Foerster, 64, has been part of Shanahan’s staff since 2019, initially joining as a game-planning assistant before being promoted to offensive line coach. He added run-coordinator duties in 2022 and was elevated to assistant head coach three seasons later.
