Joshua’s Emotional Return to the Ring
Anthony Joshua secured a dramatic victory against Kristian Prenga in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, recovering from two first-round knockdowns to stop his opponent in the second round. This marked Joshua’s first fight since a car crash in December claimed the lives of his close friends Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. He carried their names on his chest and walked to the ring with his team in a show of unity, with their names also on the canvas alongside the words ‘My Brother’s Keeper’.
The fight, which took place in the early hours of Sunday morning, saw Joshua face an unexpected challenge. Prenga, an Albanian boxer with a record of 20 knockouts from 20 victories, delivered a right uppercut just 20 seconds into the opening round, sending Joshua to the canvas. Later in the same round, a left uppercut put Joshua down again, leaving him unsteady.
Despite the difficult start, Joshua, at 36 years old, demonstrated resilience. He drew Prenga onto a jab before unleashing a powerful right hand. More rights followed, leading to Prenga collapsing to the canvas, prompting the referee to halt the contest.
A Path Towards a Major Bout
This victory is a significant step for Joshua, particularly with a potential fight against fellow Briton Tyson Fury on the horizon. Contracts for a fight between Joshua and Fury have been signed, though the venue and date remain unconfirmed. Joshua expressed his respect for Fury’s achievements, stating, “I respect everything he has done and everything that he has achieved, but as a fighting person, we’re here now. I hope the fans will be in for a lovely treat.”
The prospect of this long-awaited matchup had appeared to be in jeopardy during the chaotic first round against Prenga. However, Joshua’s comeback in the second round salvaged the situation. Promoter Eddie Hearn was seen giving instructions from ringside, while Oleksandr Usyk, a new ally, watched with concern.
Prenga’s defeat marked only the second of his career. Joshua’s performance against Prenga, while not a dominant display, was a victory forged through adversity during what he described as the most difficult months of his life.
Reflecting on the Challenge
Joshua acknowledged the emotional toll of the past months, stating, “It’s more than punch power. That was spirit, that was Latz, that was Sina, that was the families. It hurts to even talk about it. It has been tough.” He briefly stepped away from the microphone, adding, “It’s my brothers. I don’t want to talk about it.”
The event in Jeddah also featured other fights, including a WBO Title Fight between Hamzah Sheeraz and Simon Zachenhuber in the Super Middleweight category, and an IBF Title Fight in Super Welterweight featuring Josh Kelly against Caoimhin Agyarko. The boxing event was available as a pay-per-view live stream.
Fury had previously insisted he would not attend the fight in Saudi Arabia, having recently secured a win over Mariusz Wach in Thailand. Despite some playful banter from Joshua regarding Fury’s absence, the focus remains on the potential future bout between the two British heavyweights.
