Aldi unveils a Cuthbert the Caterpillar cuddly soft toy

This year has been a big one for Cuthbert the Caterpillar.

Back in April, the creature was caught up in a rivalry with M&S caterpillar, Colin – a dispute which resulted in an ongoing legal row over trademark between the two supermarkets.

Then, more recently, the familiar face appeared in the background of Aldi’s 2021 Christmas advert.

In the opening scene, Cuthbert the Caterpillar can be seen getting arrested by two lemon police officers – as a seeming nod to the trademark legal battle.

And now, just in time for Christmas, Aldi has unveiled a soft toy version of Cuthbert.

The plush toy is available in stores now for £3.99, following in the footsteps of the limited edition Kevin the Carrot toys that were available last year and in 2019 – some of which have appeared on auction sites for well over their retail value.

It’s likely these Cuthbert toys will be snapped up incredibly quickly too – so you’ll need to act fast to get your hands on one.

The supermarket has also stressed that purchases will be limited to two per customer, to avoid stockpiling.

And it looks like people on Twitter are struggling to contain their excitement over the new toy launch.

One person wrote: ‘This is the one I’ve been waiting for.’

While another said: ‘Oh myyyyy, I need every single plush that is on sale on the 25th, just send them all to my home address, Thank you Aldi.’

Someone else added: ‘‘YES!!!!!! @AldiUK you have made my year, Cuthbert I’m on my way.’

There’s no denying the move could reignite the old feud between the two supermarkets – especially considering that M&S has lodged an intellectual property claim with the High Court, in an effort to protect its caterpillar, Colin.

In response to this, Aldi’s social media team created the hashtag #FreeCuthbert.

Who knows what will happen next in the great caterpillar saga.
