Alexandra Burke denied superstar record deal with Stevie Wonder aged 12 – ‘Mum said no’

Singer Alexandra Burke could’ve led a superstar life from the age of 12, but her late mum said no.

The X Factor winner has revealed that legendary singer Stevie Wonder offered her a record deal when she was just a youngster, but her mum – Soul II Soul member Melissa Bell – rejected it.

Speaking to MailOnline, the Hallelujah singer, 33, said: “It was such an experience and at 12, you don’t really take it in. Now at 33, I realise the meaning of it that he saw something in me.”

She described the Isn’t She Lovely singer as the ‘kindest person’ she’s ever met. Apparently he gave ‘the biggest donation’ to their church – what a good guy!

Missing out on the huge deal meant Alexandra had to undergo the intense pressure of the X Factor to impress Simon Cowell with her singing voice.

But Alexandra stands by her mum’s decision to let her enjoy childhood away from the limelight.

She added: “My mum made the right decision. She always believes kids should be kids, to be able to go to school and be with your friends.

“And not to ever take that from a child because you won’t get those years back.”

Alexandra’s mum sadly passed away in 2017, aged 53, after a nine-year battle with kidney failure.

The Bad Boys singer said she got a taste of the industry from her mum, and witnessed her tackle the ups and downs of fame.

“I kind of got a talking to, to allow me to develop thick skin.”

After impressing the judges on the X Factor, she was crowned winner in 2008 and signed her first deal with Simon Cowell’s Syco Music label.

She scored an impressive six top ten hits on the UK Singles Chart with her first album Overcome.

She even got to sing a duet with her idol Beyonce!

They say never meet your heroes, but the Halo singer was no disappointment to Alexandra.

The pair stepped on stage to sing Listen from Dreamgirls during the X Factor’s duet show.

The then-19-year-old Alexandra couldn’t contain her emotions, breaking down as the pair linked arms and belted out the lyrics.

After the song, Alexandra’s face was streaked with tears as she confessed to her idol, “You’ve made my dreams come true” – aww!

Nowadays Alexandra is an icon too, and Beyonce invites her for chats in her backstage dressing room when she’s performing in London.

“She’s got kids now and she’s in a different place to when I first ever met her. The perfect example and role model to young girls out there.”
