Elaborating further about his steamy encounter, Ford explained how he had been studying for an art degree at NYU.
He said Falconer would regularly approach him in class, adding: ‘I just thought, poor thing. He has no friends. He’s glomming on to me. I had no idea he was gay. I had no idea he was trying to pick me up.’
The duo ended up heading to Studio 54 – a former disco nightclub in Manhattan – for a night out with a group of pals which included artist Andy Warhol.
After seeing Falconer and a male friend kiss, Ford dished: ‘So I thought, “Okay, these guys are gay. Well, I’ve always kind of been curious about this.” And I just belted back the vodkas.
‘By the end of the night, I was giving Ian Falconer a bl**j*b in the cab on the way back to his house on Eighth Street and Fifth Avenue, which he shared with [photographer] Patrick McMullan.
‘I remember waking up the next morning in Ian’s loft bed. Thinking, “What the f**k did I do?” And I remember saying to him — you’ve seen it in movies — “This was great, but, you know, I’m not gay.”‘
Falconer, who died earlier this year, went on to become a renowned author of children’s book series Olivia – featuring an ingenious piglet – which he developed for his niece in 1996.
Ford ultimately found love with Richard Buckley after first meeting at a fashion show in 1986.

Elsewhere in the interview, the iconic designer, who is notorious for going commando, revealed that he had finally started wearing underwear
The pair married in 2014 and welcomed their son — whose full name is Alexander John Buckley Ford — via surrogate in 2017.
Buckley sadly passed away in 2021 aged 72 after battling prolonged illness.
Elsewhere in the interview, the iconic designer, who is notorious for going commando, revealed that he had finally started wearing underwear.
Asked what prompted the change, he explained: ‘Well, especially with jeans, because these have rips. And any minute another rip is gonna happen.
‘Probably 10 years ago — this is true — before I was wearing underwear, I looked down and an actual testicle was completely out.’
Ford now plans to become a full-time filmmaker as he continues to raise son Jack as a single parent.
