‘Good Doctor’ Renewed for Season 5 at ABC

“The Good Doctor” has been renewed for Season 5 at ABC.

The popular medical drama Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore), a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, who continues to use his extraordinary medical gifts at St. Bonaventure Hospital’s surgical unit.

Along with Highmore, the series also stars Antonia Thomas as Dr. Claire Browne, Hill Harper as Dr. Marcus Andrews, Richard Schiff as Dr. Aaron Glassman, Christina Chang as Dr. Audrey Lim, Fiona Gubelmann as Dr. Morgan Reznick, Will Yun Lee as Dr. Alex Park, and Paige Spara as Lea Dilallo.

David Shore developed the series, which is based on the South Korean medical drama of the same name. Shore also serves as executive producer and showrunner. Daniel Dae Kim, Erin Gunn, David Kim and Sebastian Lee are also executive producers. Sony Pictures Television and ABC Signature produce.

“The Good Doctor” has proven to be a very strong performer in delayed viewing, rising 397% above its live+same day audience in adults 18-49 for a 2.98 rating this season across all platforms after 35 days of playback. In the same time frame, it also averaged 12.1 million viewers per episode thus far in Season 4.

This marks ABC’s first scripted renewal for the 2021-2022 season going into upfronts. Given the lingering effects of the pandemic on pilot season, Variety previously reported that broadcasters like ABC are largely expected to renew the majority of their current lineups rather than pick up new shows. “The Good Doctor” was predicted to return as are fellow ABC dramas “A Million Little Things,” “Big Sky,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Rebel,” “Station 19,” and “The Rookie.”
