Ever since Harry and Meghan got married last May, rumours of a royal feud between the couple and Prince William and Kate Middleton have been swirling. According to insiders, Harry and William’s supposed falling out came about as their wives did not get on. The couples sparked speculation once again this weekend, after fans labelled their family photo from Archie’s christening “forced” reigniting feud rumours. A photograph released by the palace showed new parents Meghan Markle, 37, and Prince Harry, 34, holding baby Archie surrounded by the Royal Family, which included the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. While the image looked happy and celebratory, fans weren’t convinced with many taking to Twitter to voice their opinions on both Kate and William’s poses.
Kate’s self-diminished pose with her arms pulled into her torso and hands clasped in her lap makes her look rather uneasy
“William doesn’t look happy at all!! And Kate has a forced smile on her face,” one wrote.
“Kate doesn’t have a real smile on her face. She looks pained,” another said.
“William looks like he smelled something terrible. They don’t look thrilled to be there,” a third wrote.
Body Language expert Judi James analysed the photo and she told Express.co.uk there could well be some tension between the couples, depending on how viewers choose to look at the portrait.
She explained: “There are two ways of reading these christening poses and what clues they might give about the ‘feud’ rumours between the brothers. One interesting point is how odd William’s pose is here, rather like the even odder pose the was chosen from Harry’s wedding photos. In that one William looked almost furtive on the stairs behind Harry and here he looks something like a nightclub bouncer.
However, she added the awkward poses could be due to the official set up.
Although, this doesn’t explain why Harry would choose these particular images out of a section of many for social media.
She continued: “Are they both the kind of pose ‘moments’ anyone can have during a shoot and if so why did Harry appear to select them for Instagram? If so why did Harry appear to select them for Instagram?”
Judi went on to compare William’s stance to his father Prince Charles, stepmother Camilla, and Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland – who all appeared pretty relaxed in the photo.
“William’s fig-leaf hand gesture and rather wary-looking smile looks a world away from the more relaxed warmth from Charles and Doria at the other end of the group,” she said.
Meanwhile, Judi described Kate’s pose as “uneasy.”
She added: “Kate’s self-diminished pose with her arms pulled into her torso and hands clasped in her lap makes her look rather uneasy, but this could be all about positive motives if she decided to sit small to avoid looking too regal and even upstage the parents and their baby.”
Although it’s unclear from this particular photo whether the couples are indeed locked in a feud, it seems brothers William and Harry are doing little to dispel these rumours – with Judi pointing out they no longer display the brotherly love they used to in public.
She concluded: “The jury’s still out then in terms of any rift, although neither Harry nor William appear to be in much of a hurry to show us all those non-verbal sibling bond and tie gestures that they grew up using.”
The family photo comes after Meghan and Harry skipped Ascot last month, reigniting feud rumours with Kate and William – who were at the racing event.
Meghan, who gave birth to their son Archie Harrison in May, is still on maternity leave which could have explained her absence from the event.
Duncan Larcombe told BAZAAR.com: “It is traditional for new royal mums to take a six-month break from official engagements.”
Therefore it’s not unusual for royal mothers to “pick and choose” their public appearances after welcoming a child.
However, the Duchess did make an appearance at the Trooping the Colour, annual royal celebration of the Queen’s birthday earlier this month, and she recently stepped out with Harry for a baseball game in support of the Invictus Games Foundation.
