There are many reasons why a parent might decide to pack food for their children to enjoy on a day out.
Perhaps the kids are fussy eaters and bringing along their favourite snacks is the only way to ensure they'll eat.
Maybe the little ones have allergies or health issues that require them to follow a very specific diet or it could be that the family is just trying to cut back and save a few pennies here and there.
Whatever the explanation, it shouldn't make much difference to anyone at the end of the day – but one mum has taken issue with parents who pack lunches for day trips, saying they "suck all enjoyment out of life".
In a post on Mumsnet, the woman held nothing back as she explained how she recently took her children to a theme park with a friend and had been really looking forward to buying lunch out – until her pal ruined everything.
"Arrived to pick her up and there she was with a bag full of homemade sandwiches and packet of crisps each," she said. "I was grateful, of course, for the time, effort and money on her part, but couldn't help feeling a little disappointed – what's the harm in buying food out?"
She continued: "It's always been the case that I can't help but feel a little sad when I see families on a day out at a theme park or zoo for example, sat on a bench eating (warm?) sandwiches wrapped in foil with a Fruit Shoot.
"I had the type of childhood where this was commonplace – packed lunch for every occasion, no need to eat out because there was food at home or it was too expensive, so I suppose it's kind of stuck with me and I don't want that kind of life.
"Am I being unreasonable to think that if you can afford a day at the zoo, then spending a little bit extra on some food is no big deal?
"Am I being unreasonable to think that life is too short to spend time making a sandwich to take on a day out, when really you can just spend a bit of extra money and have the hassle taken away?"
She added: "It just seems so strange to me and as though people try and suck all enjoyment out of life."
People on the parenting forum were shocked by her comments and quickly told her she was in fact being unreasonable.
One person replied: "Maybe your friend doesn't find it a hassle. Maybe she is temporarily short of money. Maybe she had half a loaf of bread that needed using up.
"I agree it's nice to have a treat of lunch out sometimes, or whenever you can, but it's not feasible for everyone all the time! You are being unreasonable to think life is too short to make your own food."
Another wrote: "That's a weird perspective. There is plenty of joy in a day out even with a packed lunch!"
A third added: "I often find food at theme parks is fast food type and would rather my own."
