My husband told me my curvy figure repulses him

DEAR DEIDRE: WHEN my husband and I met four years ago, he loved my “fuller figure”. But now he says it repulses him.

I gained a bit of extra weight during lockdown, which I’ve been trying really hard to lose.

I’m feeling really self-conscious about it and so I’ve not been interested in sex.

Last week, my husband told me he isn’t attracted to me any more.

He says my body, as it is now, puts him off and he would rather masturbate than have sex with me.

DEIDRE SAYS: These comments are extremely hurtful and are actually a form of abuse.

If he is behaving like this in front of your daughter, it will be damaging for her too.

Firstly, talk to your GP. They will be able to suggest healthy ways for you to lose weight. There is also lots of useful information at nhs.uk/live-well.

It might also help to organise some couples’ counselling. My support pack on Counselling shows where to find support.

Explain to your husband how destructive his comments are – to you and your daughter. I am sending you my support pack Standing Up For Yourself, which will help.
