Back when I was in high school prepping for college-application season, I attended a writing workshop on the college essay. The presenter shared the opening line of a former applicant's essay: They wrote that their best place for thinking was the bathroom. I couldn't help but nod my head because I, like many others, actually do a lot of thinking in the bathroom.
Why wouldn't we? The bathroom is the perfect space for relaxation and reflection, even when it's unplanned. You can get lost singing in the shower or enjoy a few moments of calm with a magazine. It's truly a sanctuary like no other, so of course, many people invest time and effort in curating their bathroom's aesthetic with gorgeous decor and shelves full of beauty products.
Because of that, we just had to know: What's the best thing you ever added to your bathroom? We polled makeup artists, influencers, and our very own Allure and AD editors to find out.
"The biggest blessing of living at my home is this tub — I'm a sucker for baths and bath products, specifically the Ouai Chill Pills. I drop one into hot water after a long day and just soak in the oil-packed, pill-shaped bomb. It's loaded with jojoba, safflower, and hemp seed oils to moisturize and calm my body. And not going to lie, it does wonders for my mind too, thanks to the relaxing jasmine and rose scent."

"If your morning routine is like mine, listening to podcasts is a must. And while my iPhone is great for many things, amplifying sounds from its speakers isn't one of them. So that's why I decided to buy an easy-to-use Bluetooth speaker, that's both waterproof and aesthetically neutral. The JBL Clip 3 can clip — good marketing — onto the shower rod, or even showerhead if your set-up allows for it. And, with a 10-hour battery life, I need to charge it only once every two weeks — of course, that's if I don't take forever getting ready."

"I am in love with my friend Sam McKnight’s Cool Girl Barely There Texture Mist! I’ve worked with Sam on many shoots and runways over the years and was thrilled when he finally bottled his signature 'done, undone' look! This spray is perfect for running through slept-in waves for an instant texture boost. I am known for my really volumized, ’60s hair, so this is my ultimate hair-perfecting secret."

"I love this Monsuri Full Body Bath Pillow. I like to take a relaxing bath after the gym and this pillow provides amazing comfort. It supports my upper neck and back and has suction cups on the bottom so you don’t have to worry about it slipping. The quilted padding provides pressure relief on my joints as well."

"If there is one thing a beauty editor can't have enough of it's bathroom storage — and sunscreen. I stay stocked up on moisturizer with SPF. When I was designing my bathroom renovation, I made sure that there were multiple places to store my backlog of products, both open shelving —because I have some gorgeous things to display — and closed cabinets for overflowing toothpaste and such. The Ikea Godmorgon mirror cabinet is ‘giant’ (that's a direct quote from my contractor). It fits all of my daily skin-care routine plus my back-up bench. Not to mention all the random antacids and vitamins I've been taking since I turned 30."

"I had never encountered a bidet until a couple of years ago when I was staying at a fancy hotel in France. It turns out the invention of the bidet relates to a French royal family’s furniture-maker, so this feels like an appropriate origin story. Anyway, fast-forward a few months and suddenly the Tushy is on the scene and very affordable. I took the plunge, got the classic model, and my bathroom — and life — was forever changed. It's easy to set up, you can add a decorative element to your toilet with different knob colors, and you'll never feel so sophisticated and refreshed. I've moved three times and the bidet is the first thing unpacked and installed."

"The Ren Clean Skincare Perfect Canvas Clean Jelly Oil Cleanser because it’s so nice and gently removes all my makeup in a single or a quick double cleanse. I love it."

"I love my VaeFae Teak Bathtub Tray! It's expandable, so it fits any size tub easily. It's really stable, so I'm not worried about it slipping around when I reach for something. And as it's teak, I don't worry about the tray getting wet and moldy. I like the little compartments for my drink, dry brush, iPad, and masks — it makes taking relaxing baths convenient. Also, I think it looks chic, so I don't feel the need to put it away after I use it."

"Since we’ve spent so much time at home this year, I’ve tried to introduce more products into my bathroom that bring the spa feeling home. Showering can sometimes feel like a means to an end. But I now like to take a few extra minutes and lather up with Necessaire Body Wash. Breathing in the Sandalwood scent transports me from my bath to the massage table at a five-star French retreat."

"The best thing I’ve ever added to my bathroom is a marble tray from CB2 where I put my skin care on display on my bathroom counter. It’s great for making content because it's really pretty. It makes me remember to do my skin-care routine because it’s sitting right there. And it's so beautiful to look at."

"Given the wastefulness of traditional toilet tissue and the well-documented toilet paper panic of 2020, I was relieved to learn about other options: I've become a big fan of the bamboo toilet paper from Reel. Bamboo is a much more regenerative material than trees and I very much appreciate the texture. It's way softer than I anticipated! Reel's products are delivered on a cadence you determine so there are no last-minute trips to the nearest store."

"The best thing I added to my bathroom was this hand-painted, zigzag mural painted with water-resistant paint, which I made into a coated wallpaper that can be used in bathrooms. Adding pattern and warm, vibrant colors immediately softened the hard stone edges and made my bathroom so much more welcoming. The rose pinks and warm colors also throw a really flattering, reflected light around the room so it makes me look good, which of course makes me happy and is a great way to start the day!"

"The best thing I ever added to my bathroom is Oil For the Bath Senses. Not only is it beautiful to look at [but] it [also] softens my skin and smells like a dream!"

"I love everything about my New York City rental — except for the bathroom. Since I can't exactly do a complete reno in an apartment I don't own, I was looking for creative — and temporary — ways to make it feel more like me. So I used removable wallpaper, specifically the RoomMates Tropical Zoo Peel & Stick Wallpaper, to add some interest. Miraculously, the colors in the wallpaper almost make the original brown tiles look like they were put there purposely."

"Adding a towel warmer was the absolute best thing to do! It's such a wonderful feeling to step from the shower or bath and wrap yourself in a fluffy, warm towel. It truly feels like a hug from your first true love. And who doesn't need as much love as possible on a daily basis?"

"The best thing that I added to my bathroom was the Gamma Sconces for Artemide by Sergio Mazza. My bathroom is made of marble, marble, and more marble, and as distinctive as each individual slab is, it’s still commonly used in many bathrooms. To add a personal touch, I wanted to bring something unique and fun as I like to do in many of my designs, so I added these sconces. Even though they are vintage, they have not been hard to come by. Usually, you find them in chrome, but once in a while you can find them in brass."

"My best bathroom hack is storing mouthwash in a glass decanter. I made this reel about it. People love this tip! Any glass bottle or decanter will do. Some people use old alcohol bottles. They’re all so pretty!"
