An audio clip has gone viral online after claiming the sound can only be heard if you are under 25 years old.
The clip, which was first uploaded by @metzie72 on TikTok, starts by saying: "Only people under the age of 25 can hear this sound. Listen. Did you hear it?"
Apparently the mosquito-like sound is set at a frequency of 17,500 Hertz which older people can't hear and thousands of TikTok users have tried it with their family members.
In one clip shared by 32-year-old Maylinn, she played the clip together with her niece, Carmen, who is 17 years old.
Can you hear the sound? Let us know in the comments below.
When the audio is played, Carmen quickly covers her ears in shock and Maylinn looks at her, wondering what the sound is.
Viewers who have tested it shared their results, with one saying: "My mum refuses to believe there is sound."
"I'm 18 and I can't hear a thing," another wrote and a man commented: "I'm 43 and heard it…"
But some who heard the pitch described it like "TV static" sound or a "dog whistle".
So why can some people hear it and some can't?
According to a book listed in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), it has to do with the audible spectrum in human ears.

The authors explained that a human being can hear sounds in the frequency range from about 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.
When you are young, this full range is usually heard.
But, an individual loses their hearing sensitivity as they get older and the upper limit could reduce to an average of 15,000 to 17,000 Hz.
When the sound goes over that range, there is a chance that some people struggle to hear it.
