WFH and employee power: Glassdoor predicts top workplace trends for 2022

The working world of today is pretty different from that a few years back.

Covid, as we know, changed everything, making WFH and Zoom part of our everyday vernacular.

The ripple effect of this will be longlasting. So what will work look like next year, or the year after that?

Glassdoor economist Lauren Thomas has shared her predictions, highlighting four key workplace trends for 2022…

Hiring will be tricky

‘In 2021 the UK saw disrupted immigration, an ageing population, workers re-evaluating their priorities and a quicker-than-expected recovery in customer demand,’ says Lauren. ‘These combined factors mean labour markets will remain tight throughout 2022.’

Employers may struggle to find and retain great staff. What will be key is flexibility and creativity – companies will need to embrace remote working, prioritise creating a good workplace culture, and consider people’s needs beyond the traditional 9 to 5.

Glassdoor also suggest that comanies ‘should look to unlock new talent pools by seeking out overlooked workers such as remote workers, recent retirees, less-abled workers or those with a criminal history’.

Remote workers will expect better pay

Yes, we’ll still be working from home in 2022. But now, employers shouldn’t expect this as a way to save money.

‘Remote work is now an almost-necessary tool for companies, and no longer the secret superpower for employers who could afford to offer it,’ explains Lauren. ‘With the recruiting advantage of remote work diluted, employers need to provide more attractive offers and for many, this means boosting salaries.

‘As we move into 2022, workers who were previously plentiful locally may now be swept up by the wave of remote opportunities, leaving local employers to pay more as major companies compete more aggressively for remote talent.’

In short: competition to get talent will be fierce, and offering remote work is no longer a shiny perk – it’s a minimum expectation – so you’ll need to do more to get people in the door.

Diversity and inclusion will continue to be a priority

‘Glassdoor found that 72% of UK job seekers and employees consider a diverse workforce an important factor when evaluating companies and job offers and 2022 will be the inflection point for companies’ DEI efforts,’ says Lauren. ‘Employees will expect to see progress from companies and the goodwill gained by goal-setting and pledges through the last two years will wear thin if not followed through with real action.

‘Holding companies accountable for their promises will help “level up” the conversation around transparency.’

Workplace community will expand beyond office walls

Pre-Covid, free snacks and office bean bags may have been the call of the day, but now, with the rise of remote working, the way we convey workplace culture and community has to change.

That may mean socialising opportunities that aren’t in an office, mental healthcare provisions, and getting creative with perks that can be delivered to homes, not just around a traditional workspace.
