What could possibly be better than one golden-voiced Italian? Andrea Bocelli has clearly passed his glorious gift on to his children and nine-year-old daughter Virginia recently delighted fans with a duet on Leonard Cohen’s Halleluyah at Christmas. Her older brother Matteo has already recorded one hit record with their father and is poised to release his debut album later this year. He has often spoken of his love for Ed Sheeran’s music and fans are hoping for a duet – but until then Andrea and Matteo have made Sheeran’s Perfect Symphony their own in a series of moving performances.

Perfect Symphony, of course, is Andrea’s own take on Sheerans’ original chart-topping 2017 single, Perfect, which was the fifth biggest song of the decade on the UK charts and fifteenth in America.

The Italian opera star’s children are huge fans of the Brit singer and persuaded their father to team up with Sheeran on an orchestral popera duet.

The recording of the video took place at Andrea’s lavish house, with a clearly star-struck Matteo in the background. Now he has stepped into the limelight himself, to perform the song in spectacular fashion with his father.

The studio version below was recorded for the BBC Radio Two acoustic Piano Room sessions in October 2018.

The following summer a fan captured a remarkably high-quality recording of the Bocellis in concert at the Hollywood Bowl, in July 2019.

Both versions not only display the vocal power and beauty of the pair, but they also show the trust, harmony and emotion between teh father and son.

Watching it is as emotional as listening to the gorgeous music they create.

For the past year, Matteo has been teasing the release of his debut album on his Instagram, with pictures showing him hard at work in the recording studio.

So far, he has kept details of the potential tracklisting and any potential famous duet partners secret.

When he was asked previously about singing with Sheeran he could not disguise his hopes.

Matteo said: “I have many favourite singers. But, of course, I’ve always been attracted by the voice of Ed Sheeran. I’ve followed him since the very beginning of his career. One day it would be amazing to do [a collaboration with him].

“I had the chance to meet him and he’s a fantastic person. So humble…that’s another thing that really impressed me. So who knows? I hope in the future!”

He also recently posted a video of himself at the piano singing a stripped-back version of Justin Bieber’s Holy.
