24 Years After First Emmy Win, Gillian Anderson Could Take Home Another Trophy for 'The Crown'

With a total of 24 nominations, The Crown received plenty of Emmy recognition. The Netflix series about Britain’s royal family is predicted a big winner during the 2021 Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 19. Many critics believe it’ll be a big night for the show and its stars, including Gillian Anderson. Two decades after her first Emmy victory, Anderson is looking to win her second trophy.

Gillian Anderson won an Emmy 24 years ago for ‘The X-Files’

Anderson is best known to TV fans as Dana Scully on the Fox series The X-Files. The show followed Scully and her partner Fox Mulder (David Duchovny), investigating aliens and other supernatural cases. Although Mulder believes in the concept of paranormal beings, Scully is skeptical about the matter.

The X-Files proved to be a success, earning its stars numerous Emmy nominations. From 1996 to 1999, Anderson received nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. In 1997, Anderson won the award beating out contenders such as Roma Downey, Julianna Margulies, Sherry Stringfield, and Christine Lahti.

In 2020, Anderson debuted as Margaret Thatcher in the fourth season of The Crown. This was the show’s biggest season as it featured Prince Charles’ (Josh O’Connor) marriage to Princess Diana (Emma Corrin). It also chronicled Thatcher’s struggles as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and her complicated relationship with Queen Elizabeth II (Olivia Colman).

Although Anderson’s portrayal of Thatcher received mixed reactions from The Crown fans, however, it was praised by TV critics. According to The Independent, Anderson’s performance is described as “something extraordinary in making an often vilified historical figure feel like a real human being.”

Earlier this year, she won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female actor in a Drama Series. Now, she has the chance to complete the trifecta with an Emmy win for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

Anderson will have to contend with several other talented ladies, including her The Crown co-stars Helena Bonham Carter and Emerald Fennell. The rest of the nominees are Aunjanue Ellis from Lovecraft Country and The Handmaid’s Tales‘ Madeline Brewer, Samira Wiley, Yvonne Strahovski, and Ann Dowd.

According to, Anderson is the clear favorite to win. So odds are Anderson will take home her second Emmy 24 years after her first win. Yet, given Emmy’s history, there may be a few surprises.
