Coronation Street star confirms double return after cobbles exit

Coronation Street star Claire Sweeney has revealed when her character, Cassandra "Cassie" Plummer, will be returning to the ITV soap.

Viewers will recall that just days after making her debut on the cobbles, Cassie left Weatherfield with estranged mother, Evelyn Plummer, in order to get clean so she can meet her long-lost son, Tyrone Dobbs.

Soap watchers had been left wondering if and when the duo would be returning but need not worry as Claire, 52, has revealed their comeback date.

Appearing on Wednesday's Lorraine, the actress said: "I'm back on August 16th on screen and I'm back in the thick of filming, working with the wonderful Alan Halsall [Tyrone]. He’s so good, and Maureen [Lipman, who plays Evelyn] , and Sally Carman [Abi Franklin] as well, I love it."

It comes as Claire has admitted she is "very grateful" after making her debut on Coronation Street as Cassandra "Cassie" Plummer.

The actress made her first appearance last month as Tyrone's long-lost mum and Evelyn's estranged daughter Cassie.

Taking to Twitter, Claire wrote: "Had so many lovely comments about my first scene in @itvcorrie with the amazing Dame Maureen Lipman. Written by @Iankershaw and directed by Abe Dukes. Thanks for all your kind words, feel very grateful."

Soap fans were quick to react to the tweet as one person said: "The best two-hander in serial drama for many a year – Maureen Lipman superb as ever with @clairesweeney knocking it right back at her. A masterclass in timing, delivery and believability – in other words- acting at its finest."

A different account put: "So happy you've arrived, Loved watching you this week, introducing Cassie was a great next step for Evelin & Tyron. You was incredible on Wednesday night, Cannot wait to see more of you soon & see how the story develops. X @clairesweeney."

Another follower wrote: "Congrats on a great first two episodes claire, you and maureen are AMAZING together i can't wait to see more of cassie. i love her already."

While a different fan added: "You're already making me proud and what a great addition to the show as always too" with a heart emoji.

Upon Cassie's arrival, Evelyn was left both devastated and furious after Cassie was rushed to hospital following a heroin overdose.

And things went from bad to worse when Cassie and Tyrone came face-to-face in nail-biting scenes. However, Tyrone had no clue that the woman he was speaking to was in fact his long-lost mother.

Later, after failing to secure £5000 to put her daughter into rehab, Evelyn met with Cassie, pretending Tyrone would be there too.

Evelyn explained that in order for her to build a relationship with her son and grandchildren she would need to get clean.

She then explained that they would be going to stay in a friend's empty flat where Evelyn could help Cassie get clean as they drove off in a taxi.

Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV and ITVX.
