EastEnders star Shona McGary has opened up about how Barbara Windsor once ‘told her off’ for being late to set.
The actress — who portrays Whitney Dean on the BBC One soap — reminisces about how the Peggy Mitchell icon heart-warmingly scolded her for being late, in scenes which viewers can see for themselves in Tuesday’s edition of Secrets From The Square (September 1).
When discussing Dame Barbara, Shona tells Stacey Dooley: ‘She told me off once.
‘I have never been so scared in my whole life!
‘She took me into a little room and she said, “Shona, darling” and I said “Yeah,” and she went, “Listen to me now.” I said “Yeah”, and she went, “You can’t ever be late, dear.”
‘I said, “Oh no, I know, but” – “Really, you can’t be late.”
‘She did it in such a lovely way. But I was never late again!’
Co-star Natalie Cassidy — who portrays Sonia Fowler — added: ‘Barbara was just amazing, all the time.
‘She was just this icon wandering round the building. This tiny ball of energy, who just looked amazing all the time.
‘She was a consummate professional.’
EastEnders returns Monday, September 7 at 8:05pm on BBC One.
