Emmerdale rocked by racial accusation as two actors mimicked co-stars accent

Emmerdale stars Isabel Hodgins and Matthew Wolfenden have been slammed with an alleged racial incident after a co-star claimed her accent was "mimicked" on set.

The pair have been absent from filming after they become embroiled in a "heated" row away from the cameras.

While both Matthew and Isabel vehemently deny the allegations made against them, it is claimed they "mimicked" the accent of a mixed-race fellow cast member.

Both Isabel and Matthew claim that there had been a misunderstanding, rather than meaning any harm by the incident.

A spokesperson for ITV told Daily Star: "While we would never comment on individual cases, Emmerdale has robust policies in place to deal with any allegations brought to our attention and take the appropriate steps."

Speaking to The Sun, a source said: "It is common knowledge on set that Matthew and Isabel are not filming at the moment following a complaint.

"This all came about after a conversation between them and another actress — during which the alleged remark was made.

"An accusation was also made that the actress’s accent had been mimicked."

Meanwhile, it is also claimed that Matthew, 41, had been rowing with Aaron Anthony, who plays Ellis Chapman on the hit ITV soap.

Despite Matthew and Isabel, 27, not filming scenes since September, it is believed that neither of the pair have been suspended by bosses at ITV.

A source added: "We have been told that Aaron brought this up with Matthew subsequently and that there was a tense conversation between them, Matthew and Isabel stopped filming afterwards.

"The female cast member who was involved is filming as normal, but she wishes that she wasn’t entangled in it.

"This issue is far from resolved, and while the claims are looked into, it is not clear when Matthew and Isabel will be back on set."

Viewers were left baffled when the pair suddenly disappeared from screens following Super Soap Week with no explanation about their absence being given until last week.

It emerged that the pair had taken a last-minute holiday to visit Diane Sugden, Victoria's step mum in Portugal.

Meanwhile, it has previously been reported that the pair may not appear on screens again until January 2022.

A source told The Sun: “It is very unlikely that Matthew and Isabel will be back on screen before Christmas.

"They have only just returned to the set, and as Emmerdale is filmed six weeks in advance, that puts their return date in January.

"It was a disappointment for the bosses and scriptwriters, who were planning for them to be a major part of Emmerdale’s Christmas storylines next month."

Following the row, an Emmerdale spokeswoman released the following statement: “While we would never comment on individual cases, Emmerdale has robust policies in place to deal with any allegations that are brought to our attention and take the appropriate steps.

"Neither actor has been suspended from Emmerdale."

Emmerdale returns to screens on Monday night at 7pm on ITV.
