Actor Martin Clunes sat on the This Morning sofa with hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield to discuss the end of an era for ITV’s Doc Martin. The series has been on screens since 2004 and after more than 70 episodes, the show is coming to an end. Speaking to Holly and Phillip, Martin said “it’s the right time” to end the long-running programme.

The Doc Martin actor appeared on the daytime show to talk about the return of his ITV drama.

Phillip asked the star: “What about Doc Martin? Let’s get on to that because that’s been delayed again. We know that this is going to be the last series.”

The 59-year-old actor smiled: “Why yes, yeah it is.”

Originally, ITV planned to screen season ten of Doc Martin in 2021, but filming has now been delayed until next year, so a 2022 release date is now planned.

Holly then asked Martin how he felt about the show coming to an end after being on screens for more than a decade.

“It feels like the right time, it does I think, you know [there’s been] ten series,” Martin replied.

Holly added: “We were talking to Jodie Comer yesterday about Killing Eve being over and you know she said the last time that kind of clacker board thing came down she knew it was the final scene.

“It will be quite emotional because she has lived and breathed that character and it must be the same for you to an extent.”

Martin took a deep breath and said: “Yes it has and it will take a while for it to sort of dawn on me.

“I have spent too many happy hours gazing out to sea.”

Holly quipped: “You could always watch it back if you miss it?”

Martin burst into laughter: “What the show? Yes, or I could go and visit Cornwall for a holiday. It’s a workplace for me, the loveliest workplace in the world.”

Doc Martin has been filmed in the picturesque north Cornwall village of Port Isaac.

The series follows surgeon Dr Martin Bellingham, who has a fear of blood, move to Cornwall to become the GP in Portwenn.

The show has delved into the life of Dr Martin, his romance with wife Louisa (played by Caroline Catz), and the lives of the Cornish residents.

Speaking of the decision to end the show producer Philippa Braithwaite previously shared: “When we launched the series in 2004 we could never have imagined how much our loyal viewers would take to the grumpy Doc like they have.

“The series has avid fans both in the UK and throughout the world and we are thrilled that Doc Martin has topped the ratings every time.

“However, after sixteen years we now feel that the time has come to say goodbye to Portwenn.”

While viewers have to wait longer than anticipated for the final series, the wait is set to be worthwhile.
