Julie and the Phantoms is a supernatural musical-comedy based on the Brazilian television series Julie e os Fantasmas. Netflix released the first series of its adaptation on Friday, September 10, 2020, which went on to receive numerous awards. Fans assumed there would be another series on the way but the streaming service had other ideas.

Julie and the Phantoms was about musical teenager Julie Molina (played by Madison Reyes) who accidentally summoned the ghosts of dead rockers.

With the help of these dead musicians, Alex (Owen Patrick Joyner), Luke (Charlie Gillespie) and Reggie (Jeremy Shada), Julie is able to achieve her dreams of becoming a professional singer.

In return, Julie gives them another chance of fulfilling their ambitions of making it in the music industry.

Season one went down a storm with subscribers as well as the critics.

Shortly after the release of the first series, Julie and the Phantoms picked up various awards, one of which was Best Musical Moment at the 2021 MTV Movie and TV Awards.

The other three were Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Costume Design, Outstanding Original Song and Multiple Camera Editing.

Up until now, Netflix has stayed very quiet on whether or not the series would be back for a second outing.

However, it has recently been confirmed that the streamer has decided to cancel Julie and the Phantoms and fans are outraged.

Taking to Twitter after hearing of the show being axed, Samantha wrote: “Seriously…. how could this even happen?!?!?!

“We’ve been waiting like 2 years for a season 2 and now we get nothing?!

“And left with a cliffhanger?! This show could have went places! I honestly feel as if I could sob…”

Jonas Almost Famous commented: “Why is Netflix SO BAD at renewing their best shows? Make it make sense! My heart is breaking knowing #JulieandthePhantoms is over.”

While Alyssa Bastoe added: “I refuse to let go and say goodbye to these characters.”

Fans have described being “heartbroken” at Netflix for getting rid of the musical series too soon.

Jade Johnstone simply asked: “So which streaming service is gonna swoop in and save Julie and the Phantoms because I don’t think we can take this show staying cancelled.” (sic)

As of yet though, no other streaming services have picked up Julie and the Phantoms for another season.

A petition has also been launched in a bid to try and save the show which has so far been signed by almost 700 fans.

The petition organiser wrote: “This show has saved many peoples mental health.

“Netflix cancelled it for no reason. Please help us save this show and get it renewed for a season 2.

“It has saved multiple people from depression, and has helped them through panic attacks.

“It is the value of money and subscriptions for you, but a lifeline for us.”

Taking to Instagram to confirm the news, executive producer Kenny Ortega wrote: “Our [Julie and the Phantoms] family want to send our love and endless thanks to our Fantoms all over the world for the tremendous outpouring of love and support you have shown us since our premiere.

“We learned this week that Netflix will not be picking us up for another season.

“Although our hearts are saddened, we move on with such pride for what we accomplished as a team and the family we built while creating Julie.”

Julie and the Phantoms season 1 is available to watch on Netflix.
