La Casa de Papel is coming to an end on Netflix with its fifth and final season has been confirmed. The new outing will follow the Money Heist gang as they attempt to escape from the Bank of Spain. One character who will be back again is Rio – here’s everything you need to know about him and who plays him in the show.
Who plays Rio in Money Heist?
Rio has been through a lot in the four seasons of Money Heist so far on Netflix.
The character was first recruited into the criminal gang in season one for his hacking skills.
Also known as Aníbal Cortés, he took part in multiple cyber-attacks anonymously, which first put him on the Professor’s (played by Álvaro Morte) radar.
As soon as he joined the gang, he soon developed feelings for Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) and the pair began a secret relationship.
By the end of the first heist on the Royal Mint of Spain, they were off living on a secluded island with their takings.
From then on, things started going badly wrong for the character after he was kidnapped by Alicia Sierra (Najwa Nimri).
He was tortured at the hands of the police, and he has been dealing with the trauma of his ordeal since.
As well as this, he has been contending with some relationship issues, splitting up with Tokyo after he returned to the gang.
This caused some tension in season four when he also began growing closer to Stockholm (Esther Acebo).
Heading into season five, Rio is likely to still be struggling with his demons as he helps his fellow heist members escape from the bank.
In the series, Rio is played by Spanish actor Miguel Herrán.
The 24-year-old star was born in Málaga, Andalusia in Spain in 1996.
