Viewers were gripped from the very beginning of Outlander as a strange vision of Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) appeared to pay a visit to Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) in her original timeline. One perceptive fan may have offered the most convincing explanation yet to the Starz drama’s biggest conundrum.
A haunting figure of a Scottish Highlander stopped by Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) and his wife Claire’s house in the first season of Outlander.
The spooky apparition bore a striking resemblance to Jamie Fraser, who eventually becomes Claire’s second husband when she travels back in time to the 1700s.
Jamie’s appearance in Claire’s present day has raised the biggest question of the series so far.
Unlike his wife, a former nurse during WWII, the Highlander doesn’t share his wife’s ability to travel through the stones of Craigh Na Dun.
Current speculation suggests that Jamie was somehow able to send a hazy representation of himself through time, which promptly disappears once Jack witnesses the watchful spirit.
However, one fan’s more recent theory has offered a far more tragic interpretation of Jamie’s unexplainable appearance in the 20th Century.
They took to Reddit with their explanation, bracing fellow viewers for a tragic end to Jamie’s story in a future instalment of Outlander.
User oldrobotlady speculated: “I always figured it was a time travel wish/ability in the afterlife.”
“Take me back to see my love the day before I met her before time travel and everything complicated her life. See her young again in her own setting.”
Jamie and Claire’s passionate romance has remained one of the most enduring relationships in recent TV history.
After several decades sticking together throughout some of the most tumultuous periods of world history, their story will eventually come to an end in the projected tenth book in Diana Gabaldon’s original book series.
As the Outlander saga takes place squarely in the realm of fantasy, Jamie may be granted one last wish to make up for his inability to travel back with Claire earlier in the series.

Once the former Jacobite is ready to draw his final breath, Jamie could inadvertently be granted one last glimpse at his wife before Claire’s life was thrown into a tailspin.
Sadly, this could mean the Frasers will have to endure a terrible tragedy at some point in the near future.
The fan continued: “I also think it means he dies first and maybe she’s on her deathbed.”
Whether it’s from old age or in the heat of battle, this viewer is convinced Jamie will die at some point in the series before Claire.
Having left his wife alone in an era not her own, Jamie travels back to the last time she was happy in her own timeline.
The rest of the Outlander enthusiast’s theory will surely have the audience reaching for the tissues if it comes to pass in the series finale.
Finally, they concluded: “What we didn’t see is when Frank walks away ghost Claire comes up and takes his hand and they walk off into the night to live happily ever after-life.”
Outlander fans will be sad when the series comes to an end regardless, but they may have to endure the heartbreaking deaths of both Jamie and Claire Fraser when it eventually reaches its conclusion.
Outlander season 6 will premiere in early 2022 on Amazon Prime Video.
