Outlander was last seen in February 2020 when series five was released on Starz and Amazon Prime Video. Having been delayed by the pandemic, the period drama isn’t expected to return until late 2021. However, there have already been talks of a spin-off starring a former enemy of Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan).

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Outlander.

Will there be a Lord John Grey spin-off?

Lord John Grey (played by David Berry was an English soldier and diplomat who is first seen in the drama when he is just 16 at the Battle of Prestonpans.

He is seen again when he is older and now the Governor of Ardsmuir, the fortress where Jamie and other Jacobites were imprisoned.

Grey was an important character in the Diana Gabaldon book series but actor Berry confirmed his last appearance in the drama was in series five’s Journeycake.

But there has been plenty of speculation around Grey returning for his own spin-off.

Prior to season seven being confirmed, showrunner Ron Moore spoke to podcast TV’s Top 5 about the possibility of a seventh series and a spinoff.

He said at the time: “I think both those things are probably going to happen and hopefully we’ll be able to say something about it before too long.”

As there will be a series seven, does this also mean that a spin-off is on the cards?

Author Gabaldon hasn’t denied the possibility of it being a show focusing on John Grey.

When a fan on Twitter asked her about a spin-off show about the former soldier, Gabaldon replied: “Who knows? Interest Has Been Expressed, is about all I could tell you.”

A new Outlander show would most likely revolve around this particular character as Gabaldon is the creator of the Lord John novel spin-off series.

So there is already plenty of material there to further develop the story of Lord John.

Actor Berry has even previously mentioned being in talks about a spin-off before.

Speaking to news.com.au, Berry revealed: “There was a point where I was in negotiations for talks about a potential spinoff but that’s sort of out of my hands, and at this point, it’s all in the realm of hypotheticals.

“I think it’s just circling back to what I said before, that John’s future in the Outlander series is undetermined.”

When Berry posted his goodbye message to Outlander fans, he mysteriously ended it with the line: “Life is long. Perhaps someday.”

Does this mean there is a chance of him making a comeback to the Outlander world?

Unfortunately for fans of the Starz drama, it is going to be quite some time until the new series.

Season six should have been out already as series five was released more than a year ago.

But as filming was majorly delayed, the release date has been pushed back.

While an official premiere date hasn’t been revealed just yet, Outlander season six is expected to be sometime later this year.

Outlander is available to watch on Amazon Prime.
