Romesh Ranganathan has been confirmed as the new presenter of The Weakest Link – taking over from Anne Robinson in a new reboot.

The 43-year-old presenter and comedian will steer the quiz series after years off-screen, with the show returning later this year.

The decision to book Romesh hints at a change in tone for the programme, with the series likely to take a more funny approach, after Robinson became famed for her cutting remarks while she was in charge.

Addressing the exciting announcement, Romesh said: “It’s an honour to be asked to bring what is basically a TV institution back to our screens. Anne was an amazing host and to step into her shoes is an anxiety-inducing privilege.

“I’m hoping we’ve found a way to make both the fans of the show happy as well as bringing a new audience to it. If not, accept this as my apology.”

In another twist to the format, Romesh will be dealing with a gang of celebrities throughout the 12 episodes, rather than the traditional members of the public.

All money earned will be in the name of charity.

The Weakest Link first launched in 2000, and was last seen on screen when a Children in Need special aired in 2017.

Speaking on Lorraine today, Anne gave Romesh her seal of approval to take over as face of the franchise, and said: “I only learnt about it at the weekend which is great, and I'm delighted.

“It will be a very different Weakest Link because I honestly couldn't get away with saying now what I used to say.”

Anne will make her debut as the host of iconic show Countdown today (Monday 28 June).

Suzy Lamb, Managing Director of Entertainment and Music at BBC Studios Productions, said: “It’s hugely exciting to be bringing back one of the world’s most successful quiz shows to BBC One.

“Anne was a brilliant host for many years and with Romesh taking the reins it’s going to be incredibly funny and as fiery as ever. The team can’t wait to get started.”

Filming will commence in Glasgow, Scotland, with a broadcast date yet to be confirmed.
