Spider-Man: No Way Home, the official title for Tom Holland’s third webslinging adventure, has finally been unleashed. The much-anticipated and mysterious sequel is planned to hit theaters on Dec. 17.
While the title was announced on Feb. 24 by Sony Pictures, it was foreshadowed the previous night by a series of jokey Instagram posts from Holland, Jacob Batalon, and Zendaya, “revealing” obviously fake names for the film. While most have dismissed the title cards for “Phone Home,” “Homewrecker,” and “Homeslice” as part of the gag, some think they might be teasing something huge for the threequel.
[Spoiler alert: We can’t promise that this rampant speculation won’t end up being true. Tread lightly.]
Who is the villain in ‘Spider-Man: Now Way Home’?
In each of the fake title cards posted by the cast of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the “Spider-Man” part has a different color scheme. In Holland’s, it’s green, while Batalon’s is mostly grey and Zendaya’s is purple.
Lining them up in a certain order, fans on social media thought they could see an allusion to a major Spider-Man villain.
Could these fake titles be quietly teasing the arrival of the Green Goblin, Spider-Man’s most famous villain, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Might be a stretch, but the evidence is certainly interesting.
And potentially true! Once these tweets made the rounds, Daniel Richtman, a noted Twitter personality who has a somewhat sturdy reputation for movie scoops, came right out and said it.
While Richtman doesn’t have the best track record for scoops, he’s been right about enough things to warrant attention. Just today, he correctly reported that Sony would reveal the name of the next Spider-Man film, and that Disney would reveal a poster for Pixar’s Luca ahead of a new trailer tomorrow. Both of which were true.
Past rumors would line up with this new one
Most of the rumors surrounding Spider-Man: No Way Home, aside from its title, have concerned its cast. Specifically, that it will tap into the multiverse and feature appearances from Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and other cast members from past iterations of the series.
One such rumor has suggested that both Willem Dafoe and Dane DeHaan will return as their versions of the Green Goblin. This would also, allegedly, form a trio with an unannounced new Goblin specific to Holland’s version of Spider-Man.
It remains to be seen if this will come to pass, as none of these multiverse rumors have been officially confirmed. While Jamie Foxx and Alfred Molina are known to be returning as Electro and Doctor Octopus, respectively, there still hasn’t been any word if either is the main villain of the film, leaving a potential opening for the Green Goblin to fill.
DeHaan himself has denied any involvement in interviews, though few fans seem to be taking his word for it. Other rumors claim that Dafoe has already been seen on set.
