Season nine of The Blacklist will continue in January, and the series could finally be getting closer to exposing the true identity of Raymond ‘Red’ Reddington (played by James Spader). However, some eagle-eyed fans of the popular NBC thriller have returned to some earlier episodes and may have beaten the series at its own game.

A new theory has proposed Red could, in fact, be the uncle of Liz Keen (Megan Boone).

Fans who have been keeping up with the show so far know the FBI informant was previously revealed to be her father.

However, Red was later exposed as an imposter, and the true identity of James Spader’s character remains a mystery.

Speculation has been running rampant in the lead-up to the second part of the current season, though it may still be some time before fans are given his true identity.

In the meantime, some popular theories have come to light, including one which claims a number of clues have pointed to Red actually being the brother of Liz’s mother Katarina Rostova (Lotte Verbeek).

One observant fan took to Reddit after spotting some crucial moments earlier in the series which could back up the surprise twist.

User themanswer007 posted: “In the episode where Reddington has his “last meal” he talks about how he was misunderstood as a child and he saw himself one way while other people saw him another.

“He could be alluding to how he feels some attraction to guys while still liking women.”

Although Red has been shown to be a notorious ladies man throughout the series, there has also been an occasional hint that he may be bisexual.

The post goes on to highlight a number of reveals about Red’s family history which seem to line up with Katarina’s.

They continued: “He then goes on to explain how his father was very moralistic which means he couldn’t accept his son’s way of life.

“Instead of understanding his son, Dom excommunicated him.”

In the show’s flashbacks, Katarina’s father Dominic Wilson (Brian Dennehy) is portrayed as a cruel and uncaring ex-KGB agent.

This theory suggests Dom may have banished his own son from his house well before the events revealed in the series.

Now fatherless, Katarina’s brother, posing as Red, could still be afraid to share his true self, and instead claims to be Liz’s father rather than her uncle.

“His mother was more empathetic with him and ‘understood the problems of the human heart’ and that ‘the heart wants what the heart wants,’” the theory explained.

“‘Red’ was probably ashamed that he had these feelings because of the conflict with Dom and kept it hidden for the entire series.

“Also on Dom’s deathbed, ‘Red’ asked him why he forgave Katarina and not him. Pointing out that Dom has another child.”

This theory received some pushback from other sceptical fans, though it clearly highlights Red still has plenty of secrets that have yet to be revealed.

The Blacklist season nine continues Thursday, January 6 on NBC.
