The Chase fans were left stunned after a contestant dubbed host Bradley Walsh a “fruit cake” during a friendly exchange on the ITV show.

Contestant Michelle, a council woman from Northampton, began chatting host Bradley, 61, after finishing her initial quiz to face the chaser.

After a successful start, Bradley asked what she likes to do for fun. Michelle explained that she likes to sew and cook, and especially enjoys baking and eating cake.

“What’s your favourite cake?” Walsh asked,

To which she replied: “Probably just a sponge”.

When the contestant asked Walsh which cake he preferred, he said “I love a fruit cake”

Michelle then shocked viewers by saying: “I could’ve guessed”.

The snarky comment sparked laughter from the show’s audience and left the former footballer shocked into silence.

After taking a moment to act playfully offended, Bradley “swiftly” moved on to the next round where Michelle went head-to-head with no-nonsense chaser, Jenny Ryan.

Fans took to Twitter to react: “Did Michelle just call Bradley a fruitcake?? I’m dying lol! #thechase”

“Poor Bradley don’t take it personally love,” said another.

Fans also commented on the contestants smug demeanour, saying: “Sh*t wouldn't want to mess with Michelle lol”

With another adding: “Michelle is a bit smug looking, kind of hope she gets beat #TheChase”

The contestant went on to bag a whopping £40k for the collective prize pot, and seem to show no emotion at having won such a large amount of money

“Come on Michelle crack a smile love #[email protected]

A second said: “I'm no quizzer and I answered the questions correctly… #thechase and I showed more emotion than the contestant who won the £40k”

Later in the episode fans saw the fourth contestant Allie choose the minus £17k option during her battle with the chaser, further shocking viewers after the rest of her team managed to put away £47k.

“Wanted for robbery of £17k #thechase” said one user.

Another added: “minus £17k? Absolute disgrace. I would be LIVID”

After a tense final round the remaining three contestants lost out on their $30k prize pot after being beaten by tough quizzer Jenny, who dubbed their performance a “valiant effort”.
