The Grand Tour's Richard Hammond reveals the moment James May 'erupted' at him behind-the-scenes over Marmite

THE Grand Tour's Richard Hammond has revealed the moment James May "erupted" at him behind-the-scenes over Marmite.

The pair have worked together alongside co-host Jeremy Clarkson for17 years, first on Top Gear and now on Amazon Prime Video series, The Grand Tour.

Ahead of their latest special, A Massive Hunt, which premieres on the streaming service later this month, Richard has opened up about how working so closely together for so long can lead to some off-camera tensions.

He told the Express: "A while ago I was making my breakfast, spreading some Marmite on toast. And James was standing there, and he suddenly erupted.

“It turned out he hates the way I spread my marmite to the edge of the toast and just detonated at me."

The 50-year-old continued: “That’s when we both stopped and realised, we have spent too long together.

“Because, it’s not only the fact that he’s noticed that, it’s that for so many years it’s been annoying to him the way I make my own breakfast.

"It speaks to how many breakfasts we’ve shared together.”

Meanwhile, James, 57, previously opened up about why Richard and Jeremy, 60, give him such a hard time on the show.

He told The Sun Online: "I think it’s simply that they’re jealous.

"It’s just ganging up really but I don’t mind, I see it as a sign of my strength."

In the new special, which was filmed in Madagascar, James is targeted by his co-stars over his choice of vehicle and the fact the ignition switch is on the outside.

He added: "I did try and wire up the ignition switch so that it had a massive voltage in it the next time they touched it.

"But they’re quite cleverly designed those ignition switches for obvious reasons, because they’re a safety device so it’s very difficult to get into them and tamper with them. So I failed at that."

The Grand Tour: A Massive Hunt premieres on Amazon Prime Video on December 18.
