The Last Kingdom is a popular historical drama series on Netflix, which is based on The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell. The series follows Uhtred of Bebbanburg (played by Alexander Dreymon) who has sworn his allegiance to both the Saxons and the Danes. Fans are keen to know how many seasons of The Last Kingdom there will be.
How many seasons of The Last Kingdom will there be?
The Last Kingdom made its debut on BBC Two and BBC America back in October 2015, and the eight-part season went down a storm with fans of historical dramas.
By the time the third season was released, the series had moved to Netflix, and season four was released on the streaming platform in April 2020.
Fans were thrilled to hear the series was renewed for a fifth season back in July 2020, however, an official release date for the new episodes has not yet been revealed.
The story is loosely based on Anglo-Saxon history and there are plenty of defining moments in history still left to explore.
As the series is based on novels, there is plenty of source material to provide inspiration, but this will only last as long as the books continue.
There have been significant plot twists from the books, including some plotlines relating to Uhtred’s relationships.
Some of the character deaths have also been changed up since the books were published, so there is really no knowing what to expect next.
The first season covered the novels The Last Kingdom and The Pale Horseman, and ever since then, each season has been based on the following two books.
With this in mind, season five should in theory cover the events of Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer, which were released in 2015 and 2016 respectively.
Fans will be pleased to hear there are three more books to cover, with Cornwell releasing the 13th book, titled War Lord, in October 2020.
However, in March 2020 the author revealed that the 13th book will be the final novel in the series, so Uhtred’s adventure will stop there.
For fans of the series, it means there will be at least one more season to come after season five. There is a chance the story will reach across into a seventh season, focusing solely on the content from War Lord.
Cornwell has stressed how he has very little involvement in the creation of the series, which is written by Stephen Butchard.
He said on Facebook: “Bernard Cornwell fans, the time has come…We are delighted to reveal the title for the final book in The Last Kingdom series, War Lord. Coming October 15, 2020.”
Fans revealed their disappointment but praised the author for his incredible storytelling and bringing some historical figures back to life.

One fan said: “All good things must come to an end. Congratulations Bernard Cornwell on completing a thoroughbred epic, which, in my humble opinion, represents the greatest achievement in an impressive career. You are a true pro – consistent, industrious, captivating.”
Another fan wrote: “It was my son who introduced me to Uhtred, and these books have given us years of wonderful tales to discuss.
“I am so glad you will bring his story full circle. What an adventure! What a life! Always gritty and real, but so satisfying. I can’t thank you enough!”
Fans will be pleased to hear Uhtred has so far survived through all of the books, so hopefully he will not be killed off when the final season does air.
Viewers are hoping he manages to claim back his birthright and win Bebbanburg from his evil uncle.
Producer Vicky Delow spoke about the sheer scale of the series and how the cast and crew never expected it to be so big.
She said: “I think The Last Kingdom is a huge success because we give the audience a great combination of really amazing battles, fights, stunts but we also give them great heart and great humour – two things that are really, really important on this show.
“Our characters are very well-rounded, they all have a story to tell, you go with each and every one of them in their story and they’re all incredibly relatable.”
In the upcoming season, fans are hoping to find out more about some of the characters’ backgrounds, including Uhtred’s friends Finan (Mark Rowley) and Sihtric (Arnas Fedaravicius).
With the popularity of the series ever-increasing, fans can rest assured there is likely to be at least one more season left to come.
