As fans eagerly await the highly anticipated fourth season of Virgin River to premiere on Netflix, Alexandra Breckenridge who played Mel Monroe took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes clip. However, she was also introducing a new character which had viewers concerned about the local doctor Doc Mullins (played by Tim Matheson).

The video posted on Instagram was a clip of Alexandra dancing to a Montell Jordan hit, next to an unfamiliar cast member.

The 19-second clip was published with the caption: “This is how we welcome Dr. Cameron Hayek to VR.”

With a new doctor on the scene, many fans took to the comment section to share their concerns about Doc after it was revealed he had some health conditions.

Fans including Marjorie who penned: “Protect Vernon at all costs tho.”

In season three, fans learned about Doc’s declining health as he was beginning to lose his eyesight.

Just as he was going to break the news to his fiancee Hope McCrea (Annette O’Toole) a heap of people unexpectedly emerged.

The guests showed up to throw Doc a surprise party, unaware he was in the middle of a serious conversation.

With the partygoers, jumping up and surprising the couple, the right moment to tell Hope about his failing eyesight had passed.

With a new doctor on the scene, viewers are keen to find out if Dr Hayek’s arrival is a result of Doc’s deteriorating eyesight.

Unde the post, Linda shared her concerts and commented: “I hope they don’t lose Dr Vernon.”

“Where’s Mullins gonna be though?” asked Courtney.

Whilst Pam begged: Please don’t tell me Doc Mullins is leaving the show! I am a huge fan!”

In an interview with TV Line Showrunner, Sue Tenney gave an insight into Doc’s health and said: “Doc has some stuff going on next season.

“He’s going to rise to the challenge, but it is a real complication for him, especially for him practising medicine going forward.”

In season three, it was revealed his condition was called wet age-related macular degeneration.

Dr David Eichenbaum, an ophthalmology specialist from St. Petersburg, Florida spoke to about the character’s disease.

He called it an: “Age-related macular generation is the leading cause of blindness for folks ages 60 or older in the U.S.

He continued: “While 11 million people in the U.S. have age-related macular degeneration, only about one million have the more advanced form that the character in Virgin River has — the wet macular degenerative form.”

Eichenbaum explained Doc’s type is caused by abnormal blood vessels that leak fluid and/or blood into the centre part of the retina called the macula.

Fans will have to tune into season four to see how Doc will deal with his illness, and how it will affect his practice.

Virgin River seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix.
