Yellowstone star Kevin Costner has a lot to be thankful for in 2021. With seven children and a beautiful wife, the Hollywood A-lister is a proud family man both on- and off-camera.
The Field of Dreams icon wed his first wife Cindy Silva while attending California State University, Fullerton. Silva spent summers playing a princess at Disneyland, according to Prevention, and the young lovebirds both found their fairytale ending in 1978 after tying the knot. Silva and Costner had three children together, and worked together on multiple films including Dances With Wolves, for which Costner won the Academy Award for both Best Director and Best Picture. However, in 1994, the pair divorced after 16 years of marriage.
Costner went on to have another child with girlfriend Bridget Rooney before marrying model and handbag designer Christine Baumgartner in 2004. Who is Baumgartner — a woman 19 years Costner’s junior — and why did she and Costner almost not get married? Keep scrolling to find out!
Christine Baumgartner welcomed three children with Kevin Costner
It was not quite love at first sight for Christina Baumgartner and Kevin Costner. While the pair met over a decade prior on a golf course, they did not start dating until 1998. They briefly split in 2002 because Costner was not looking to have more children. “She said, ‘I’m going to wait for you, but not long. When you come to your sense, come back to me,” Costner told Parade in 2012. “I woke up and thought, ‘Am I going to lose a beautiful woman who is willing to be with me to my very last breath because I am afraid to say yes to a child?’ That’s all it took,” Costner added, per Closer Weekly. “Sometimes you learn the thing you’re most afraid of will save your life.”
Baumgartner and Costner later married at his Aspen, Colo. ranch in 2004. Today, they have three children together. Costner thanked his family during his acceptance speech for the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 20th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards in 2015, calling his children “bigger than the movies,” according to Good Housekeeping.
Through it all, Costner and Baumgartner have made it work. Costner opened up to People that their marriage has grown even stronger during the pandemic. “Our house is like a river: you’ve just got to get into the flow of it,” Costner said. “And whatever you thought it was going to be, maybe it still can, but it’s going to have to work with what the day brings.”
