Yellowstone fans fume over forgotten senator storyline from series pilot ‘What happened?’

Yellowstone: Kevin Costner discusses being on show in 2018

The third season of Yellowstone wrapped up with a devastating cliffhanger last summer, and millions of die-hard fans are eagerly awaiting the return of Taylor Sheridan’s Western series on Paramount. However, some perceptive viewers are wondering why a seemingly important character was forgotten after the first episode.

Critical Yellowstone fans have flagged a major loose end from the very first episode of Taylor Sheridan’s modern Western drama.

In the increasingly popular series’ feature length pilot, Daybreak, viewers were introduced to a number of key characters throughout the series.

This includes the powerful Dutton family, led by ranch owner John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner), as well as two of his biggest rivals, Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and Dan Jenkins (Danny Huston).

However, one of John’s biggest political competitors also had the potential to bring the Duttons’ to their needs, before she was unceremoniously written out of the rest of the series.

Fans recently took to Reddit when they noticed this particularly noticeable omission from the rest of season one onwards.

Reddit user RNutt posted: “What happened to Senator Huntington? Was she ever seen after the pilot episode?

The viewer then complained: “From the beginning, this show has introduced characters and plotlines, then dropped them.”

During Daybreak, Broken Rock Chief Rainwater enlists the help of Senator Huntington (Jill Hennessy) in a ploy to take back control of John’s vast land.

Despite playing a major role in the feud between John’s ranch and the neighbouring Indian Reservation, Huntington hasn’t been seen since.

Showrunner Taylor Sheridan has since introduced new threats to the Yellowstone with each instalment, including the sadistic Beck brothers for season two.

Although the show has been gaining popularity, and will certainly attract millions of viewers for the season four premiere after last year’s shocking cliffhanger, more and more fans have been noticing a trend of forgotten storylines.

One fan commented: “Not as bad as the 3-4 episode hyped up attorney general. Almost no explanation on that character’s disappearance.”

Prompting another to reply: “They said she took a job with the federal government. But feels like a wasted character to me.”

Many fans have since speculated the series has been a surprise hit for relatively new network, Paramount, who weren’t anticipating having to commission follow-up seasons from Sheridan so soon.

In Yellowstone’s third season, which will air in the UK on My5 this year, John Dutton faced off against yet another foe, Roarke Morris (Josh Holloway).

Meanwhile, more secrets about the Duttons’ dark family history were revealed, including the disturbing origins of Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Jamie’s (Wes Bentley) hatred for one another.

Unfortunately, trying to juggle so many characters and extended plot lines over just ten episodes a season has left some elements from Yellowstone’s first outing by the wayside.

In a separate thread, another fan asked: “What was the goal of the Danny Huston character? His character just gets beat up and has all his money stolen from him. He never does anything at all.

“And where did Gil Birmingham go? Where is the feud between John and him gone? They barely touch it for two seasons? Did they forget??”

Thankfully, Taylor Sheridan’s gripping scripts and compelling characters are ensuring fans are still tuning in, and it’s hoped all will become clear when season four finally arrives.

Yellowstone will return with season 4 on Paramount and Peacock.
