Susanna Reid was forced to pull out of presenting Good Morning Britain due to losing her voice after the National Television Awards 2023.

Charlotte Hawkins, 48, instead filled in for Susanna, 52, alongside Ed Balls, 56, in a last-minute change on Wednesday’s episode of the ITV news programme.

Susanna had travelled to the GMB studios but decided at the eleventh hour not to appear and instead spoke from her dressing where she explained she didn’t want to ‘inflict’ her voice on viewers for three hours.

The broadcaster attended the NTAs on Tuesday evening but said her croaky voice was a mystery as she was the first person to leave and doesn’t drink or smoke.

GMB began with Charlotte announcing: ‘This is a bit of an unscheduled appearance for me this morning.’

Ed explained he arrived at ITV studio at his usual time of 4.30am but didn’t immediately suspect a problem as he walked past Susanna, who was in her dressing room, in her white dressing gown, getting ready.

Charlotte interjected: ‘You saw Susanna there but we couldn’t hear her.’

Ed agreed she was ‘croaky’ before they spoke to Susanna from her dressing room and asked how she was doing.

Cackling with laughter and sounding rather ill, Susanna replied: ‘I’m fine, I just can’t speak.’

Asked how she had lost her voice, a very croaky Susanna responded: ‘I don’t know. I don’t know if it was the heatwave inflaming my vocal cords?

‘It’s funny because it was the NTAs last night and when I got in my cab to leave the driver said, “You’re the very first person to leave the NTAs. You’re obviously not partying.”

‘And of course, I don’t drink, I don’t smoke. So there’s absolutely no reason I can understand. But I’ve completely lost my voice.’

Charlotte branded Susanna losing her voice ‘ironic’ given that she’s sober and exited the NTAs early.

Susanna went on to apologise to viewers for being forced to skip GMB, saying: ‘Thank you Charlotte for stepping in. I did not want to inflict this on our wonderful viewers for a whole three hours.’

Get well soon, Susanna.
