A former The Bachelorette star has died after his car fell from a cliff just a few weeks after welcoming his second child.

Charlie Newling, 36, appeared on Ali Oetjen’s season of the Australian reality series in 2018.

The builder made it to the top four and was initially dubbed ‘Mr Perfect’ by viewers, however the tide of public opinion turned when fans accused him of so-called controlling behaviour towards his love interest after he refused to introduce her to his family until they were ‘exclusive’ and he was sent home soon after.

This weekend, his death was confirmed by NSW Police after a car crash in Sydney’s eastern suburbs late on Saturday night.

Police and ambulance workers arrived at Raleigh Reserve after being contacted by locals who found Newling’s car on fire at the bottom of the 70-metre cliff.

The former reality star is understood to have welcomed his second child, a daughter, with his partner Kristal Taylor just eight weeks ago.

He also has a 13-year-old son from a previous relationship.

In the years since appearing on screens, Newling had found himself in trouble with the law on several occasions.

Just two days after leaving The Bachelorette, footage emerged of him being wrestled to the ground outside The Golden Sheaf in Double Bay.

Newling, who had appeared on panel show The Project earlier that night, said he had been drinking and was celebrating his time on the show with friends when a scuffle broke out with bouncers.

While he briefly dated former Bachelor star Dasha Gaivoronski after leaving the show, Newling maintained a low profile until September last year when he was sentenced to 13 months prison for threatening to torture and kill his stepfather in a series of 37 text messages over a three-hour period.

As reported by the Daily Mail, one message read: ‘You are still controlled by that flog of a husband.’

Another said: ‘I’m going to kill him one day in front of you before I go.

‘You have no idea what I’m capable of but just know it’s not going to be pretty.’

Magistrate Ross Hudson heard Newling had suffered significant childhood trauma, including having to care for his biological father when he was a teenager after he was left a paraplegic following an accident.
