Royal fans have been patiently waiting for Meghan Markle to make an appearance at the 2023 Invictus Games.

Now, the 42-year-old has joined her husband Prince Harry in Dusseldorf, Germany and apologised for 'being late to the party'.

Harry, who founded the games in 2014, gave his wife the spotlight and centre stage to give a poignant speech to the 1,600 attendees, including competitors, friends and family.

Addressing the audience, the mum-of-two told them why she missed the opening of the days games, and it was because she was spending time with her two young children in Los Angeles – including taking her eldest, Archie, to school before leaving for Germany.

She said: "It is so special to be here sorry I'm a little late to the party. I had to spend a little more time getting our little ones settled at home and get them to drop off.

"Three milkshakes and a school drop off and I just landed a couple of hours ago and I am thrilled that the first event I can do for Invictus is here with all of you. It is amazing and I hear it has got off to a good start so far."

Meghan also said she would one day want to bring her children to the event so they could experience it for themselves.

It is the first time that the couple, who got married in 2018, have been seen together at the games and, according to sources, the former Suits star did not read from a prepared speech and instead from the heart.

Meghan, as always, looked dazzling as she took the stage and donned a black shirt dress with a matching belt. She kept make-up to a minimal and opted for fuss-free loose waves and elegant jewellery.

The royal then told the audience she had visited a Fisher House in Los Angeles – the organisation that helps veterans and their families and are one of the main sponsors of the Invictus Games – a few weeks ago and was 'moved' by what she saw.

She said: "They understand, as does my husband does in previous Invictus Games how much rehabilitation matters, not just a solitary experience but as a family.

"I am very proud of the Invictus family that are here."

The crowd cheered her on while Harry was spotted smiling and clapping enthusiastically.

During her visit to day three of the games, Meghan was pictured hugging competitors and greeting attendees of the event.

The Invictus Games is like no other competitions as it invites people who are wounded servicemen, women and veterans hoping to represent their countries once more and secure a victory.

And both royal and sports fans from all around the world are undoubtedly tuning in to watch the nine-day event that welcomes 500 athletes from 21 countries to compete in 10 different sports.
